If you already have a furry friend and are looking to add another, there are plenty of dogs at Orphans of the Storm® who would do well in a home with a buddy! Both of the dogs below share or previously shared their kennels with another dog, so it’s a good indication that they could do well in a home with four-legged friends. Of course, we always recommend that you bring your current dog to the shelter to make sure everybody gets along!

Troy the one-year-old Boxer mix is a playful little (big) puppy. He was sharing his kennel with another one-year-old pup who has since been adopted, so now it’s Troy’s turn! Troy is always ready to say hello to anyone and everyone who walks by his kennel, and he was just as friendly when we were out and about on our walk and in the off-leash run. Considering he’s still young and probably hasn’t had too much training, Troy walked pretty nicely on the leash.

Troy has such cute markings

Troy had a great time running around and stretching his legs in the off-leash run. One minute he’d be by my side to get a nice scratch on the ears, and the next he’d be running laps. He never tried to play too rough with his kennelmate; mostly, he was just thrilled to be out in the snow. If you’re looking for a young dog who can grow into the perfect companion, come in soon to meet Troy!

Saber the one-year-old black Labrador Retriever mix is another young, sweet pooch. He currently shares his kennel with Jade and boy, was he excited to come out for a walk! He doesn’t have the best leash manners (he can pull a bit), but he’s young enough and smart enough to learn how to be an excellent walking buddy. Labs aren’t the most popular breed in America for nothing, and Saber is a fine example.

Saber says, “I’m ready for my close-up!”

Saber is super affectionate. He loves to give doggy kisses and loves to cuddle. Who could possibly resist that adorable face? If you’re looking for a dog who will stay by your side, Saber could be the one for you. As long as you’re petting him, he’s happy to stay as close to you as possible. Don’t let Black Dog Syndrome stop you from getting to know Saber!

Orphans of the Storm® also has some pooches who would probably do best as the only dog in a home. If you’re a one-dog kind of person, Molly, Rock, Diamond, and Honey Lamb are all great choices!

I also spent some time with Buddy (who covered my face in doggy kisses) and Lucky. Lucky used to share his kennel with another dog who has since been adopted, but I haven’t seen Buddy interact with other dogs yet to know how he does. You can always call the shelter for more specific information on any of our dogs.

As always, if you’re interested in sharing your own Orphans of the Storm® Success Story, please email meetthepooches@gmail.com.

Orphans of the Storm® also has plenty of upcoming events! Tonight is a book signing at Cellar Gate in Highwood; Saturday is another opportunity to meet your new friend for life at Northbrook Court; and April 28 is the annual benefit dinner. Check out the shelter’s Events page on Facebook for more information!

  1. Saber reminds me a lot of Max A Pooch when we found him at Orphans of the Storm. I’m glad you mentioned black dog syndrome. In March Max A Pooch’s Awesome Animal Advocates is are going to have a guest who discusses black cat/dog syndrome. We hope you link to it so people become more informed about the black shelter and rescue dogs who are slow to be or never adopted because of this syndrome.
