Orphans of the Storm® was founded in 1928 and has been saving homeless pets ever since. Located in Riverwoods, IL, just north of Chicago, you will find around 100 dogs (and around 300 cats) eagerly awaiting their new forever home. Orphans of the Storm® is a no-kill facility; a dog or cat will have a place at the shelter until they find their new home.
The adoption fee for a dog is $90 and includes the first inoculations, a general worming, a kennel cough preventative, a flea and tick treatment, a collar, a leash, and a tag. The dog will be spayed/neutered (if s/he is not already) at no expense to you at the Orphans of the Storm® animal hospital before going home with you.
When visiting the shelter, please bring as many family members (including other pets) with you as possible. Since our dogs are looking for a forever home, it’s important to make sure everyone gets along.
Please take your time walking through the three wings of kennels and read the information card found on the front of each kennel to learn more about the dogs available for adoption. Orphans of the Storm® has two fenced-in runs where you can get to know the dog off-leash, as well as a quarter-mile walking trail. Keep in mind that these dogs spend most of their day inside their kennel and will need to run off some energy before settling down and socializing with you.

Hi, I have had OES for 35+ years. I saw Biggie the OES “mix” on Petfinder and from the one photo that is posted, I think that she may be “purebred”.
Hi Jill–The shelter does get a fair amount of dogs who seem to be “purebred,” but since they rarely come with any sort of documentation, the shelter usually puts a “mix” tag on them just in case.

Received a note in the mail asking for an update on Babbles who I adopted on December 9th, 2013. Babbles (now “Sadie”) is amazing and bringing so much fun to our home! She especially likes Wauconda’s 65 acre dog park. We go there often. Thanks so much for rescuing this amazing pup from a shelter in Tennessee.

How would I go about bringing you a little dog that rescued last week and can not keep as I have allergies I believes she is part Pom part papparanian. She looks just like a little fox probably about 4-5 years old. Is ther a fee to bring her in and be left for adoption

Hi Susie. Please call the shelter at 847-945-0235. Unless you adopted the dog from Orphans of the Storm, I don’t believe the shelter can take her, but they may be able to give you some other options.
Ever get Dalmatians in? I got 2 from Orphans in the last 30 yrs. Im retired now, have time, like to try again.

Orphans does get Dalmatians every once in a while, but they aren’t too common. Your best bet is to check the main Orphans of the Storm website regularly because they have the full list of dogs and add newer ones faster than this blog does.

Is Howard, the black lab mix still available?

It looks like Howard was already adopted. But there are several other black lab mixes still available, if you’re particularly interested in that breed, including Chevy, Lucy, Nash, Parker, Scooby, Shasta, and Trusty.

OK, thank you. I was interested because we have a 9 year old black lab/shepherd mix who is identical to Howard. He is the best dog in the world and I swear they could be from the same litter! If he was available, we would have taken him but aren’t really looking too much for a 3rd dog.
My dog that I got almost a year ago in a shelter called “Big Dog Ranch Rescue” in Florida and she looks almost the same as a dog called jojo on your page that’s a tan mountain cur
Your dog must be adorable then! JoJo was a sweetie. She got adopted pretty quickly. Did Big Dog Ranch Rescue think that your dog is a Mountain Cur too?
