Orphans of the Storm® Medium-to-Large Dogs

You can find dogs of all shapes and sizes at Orphans of the Storm®, and this week I walked two that fall into the medium/large category. These bigger dogs appreciate bigger cuddles! Orphans of the Storm® will be closed this Monday for Memorial Day, but come in before or after to meet these two sweeties.

Scout the four-year-old Treeing Walker Coonhound mix is a special dog looking for a special home. He is completely blind because he had both eyes surgically removed. But if you just saw him walking on a leash around the neighborhood, you wouldn’t even know! Scout has no problem leading the way on walks and mostly lets his nose be his guide. He just sometimes needs occasional extra steering so he doesn’t knock into things.

Scout is a happy boy ready to go to a happy home

Scout gets along with people and other dogs. He was laying in his kennel when I came over, but as soon as I said his name he popped right up to say hello. He likes being pet and snuggled. Scout uses his other senses to help get around, and was particularly interested in listening to people play golf on the course next to the shelter. Scout would probably do best in a calmer home with a family who doesn’t plan on rearranging the furniture often. Stop in soon to let Scout show you what a special and lovable boy he is!

Good thing Scout has a good Hound nose!

Lukas the five-year-old Boxer mix seems to have his own fan club at the shelter. When we were out on our walk, every volunteer or staff member we passed had to stop and say hello to him. I can understand why! Lukas is very affectionate and will cover your face in doggy kisses whenever he gets the opportunity. He has a short docked tail that wiggles enthusiastically.

Who can resist Lukas’s handsome face?

Lukas makes for a pretty good walking companion, as long as you don’t mind going at a brisk pace most of the time. We took a few breaks during our walk around the woodland preserve, and Lukas happily sat at my feet so I could pet him. It seems like Lukas might know some basic commands, and he would also be up for learning more. Lukas would do best as the only dog in an adult home. Come in soon to see if Lukas is the one for you!

I also saw Bella, Blush, Carlos, Casper, Chester and Te Amo, Delilah, Honey Lamb, John Boy, Oliver, Sammy, and Toby (aka Tobi).

Orphans of the Storm® Dogs Say Hello to Summer

It’s been a beautiful week to spend some time outdoors with the dogs at Orphans of the Storm®. If you’re looking for a new furry friend to keep you active now that the weather is warm, we have plenty of dogs up to the task!

Delilah the ten-year-old Staffordshire Bull Terrier mix is an easy-going girl. She briefly jumped up to say hello when I first took her out of her kennel, and then we were on our way. Delilah walks nicely on the leash and has her tail up and wagging almost all the time. She stops occasionally to check in with the person at the other end of the leash, which is a good sign that she’ll be attentive to her new family.

Delilah has such a sweet face (pardon the water spot)

Delilah enjoyed sniffing her way around the off-leash run. Even though we got caught in a bit of rain, Delilah was happy to take her time. Delilah also politely sniffed a couple dogs who were on the other side of the fence. She gave me a couple quick doggy kisses while I pet her. You can read about why Delilah is a volunteer favorite here. Stop in soon to see if sweet Delilah is the pooch for you!

Oliver the three-year-old Treeing Walker Coonhound mix will get your attention with his sweet Hound eyes. I was expecting Oliver to be off and running as soon as his leash was on, but it turns out that Oliver is actually an excellent walking buddy. Although he prefers to go at a quicker pace, he rarely pulls on the leash and is mostly interested in keeping his nose to the ground to pick up all the scents he can.

Oliver’s ears are ready for lift-off!

Oliver loves getting his hips scratched. We took a break during our walk around the woodland preserve and Oliver stood by my side so I could pet him. When I got to his hips, he did a cute wiggling dance and nudged me to keep going after I stopped. Oliver would do best in an adults-only home. If that’s your situation, come in soon to meet Oliver!

Peanut Butter the four-year-old Staffordshire Bull Terrier mix is a friendly pooch who particularly enjoys going for walks. We made our way around the woodland preserve, where Peanut Butter walked nicely on the leash for the most part but did have an occasional burst of energy where we would run for a bit. Peanut Butter didn’t really pay attention to any of the dogs we passed on our walk.

Peanut Butter always smiled for the camera

Peanut Butter likes belly rubs. When we got to the off-leash run, Peanut Butter plopped down in the shade. When I started to pet her back, she rolled right over so I could pet her tummy instead. Then she started wriggling around with all four paws up in the air. It was adorable. Be sure to say hi to Peanut Butter on your next visit to the shelter!
