Orphans of the Storm® Dogs Enjoy a Sunshiny Day

It was a great day to be out and about. Lots of the dogs at Orphans of the Storm® were soaking up the sun while waiting for their turn to go for a walk.

Lobo the four-year-old Husky mix is more sociable and friendly than the average Husky, which can be sort of aloof with strangers. Lobo greeted me with a quick doggy hug and was happy to take a couple breaks during our walk around the woodland preserve so I could pet him. When we were walking, he would sometimes look back to check in with me. He did nicely on the leash and mostly stayed just a step or two ahead of me.

Lobo is a big puffball

Lobo is an attentive guy. When we were in the off-leash run, there was a fly flying around and Lobo watched it very closely. He also tried to catch it a couple times but couldn’t quite reach. Lobo is very handsome, with his reddish-brown patches and bright blue eyes. He doesn’t seem like the biggest fan of other dogs or cats so would probably prefer to be the only dog in his new home. Stop in soon to see if Lobo is the one for you!

Radie the one-year-old Staffordshire Bull Terrier mix is super sweet. He was more on the shy side when he first came to the shelter, but now he’s started to come out of his shell. Overall Radie walks nicely on the leash, but he does get an occasional burst of energy where he wants to run ahead a few feet. He also wants to say hi to other dogs, so he can pull a bit when dogs are nearby.

Radie will happily snuggle with you on the couch

Radie is affectionate. He joined me on the bench for a while and kept giving me doggy kisses. He’s very gentle about it. Radie kept scooting closer to me the longer we were sitting together and enjoyed getting a nice rub on the chest. Other volunteers agree that he’s a real sweetie. Be sure to say hi to Radie on your next visit to the shelter!

Boone the four-year-old Hound mix likes to stay active. We quickly made our way to the off-leash run, where Boone had fun exploring behind and underneath the bushes. He also liked keeping an eye on what was happening on the other side of the fence. Boone has a cute tail that curls up and over his back, and a face that looks like he’s smiling.

Boone likes to play. He was happy to chase after tennis balls, but needs a little practice on bringing them back. Also, when it was time to head back in, he wanted to play tag for a bit before getting his leash put back on. Boone gets along with other dogs and is currently sharing his kennel with another Hound (see below), so he could go to a home with or without another dog. Stop in soon to meet Boone!

Queenie the seven-year-old Treeing Walker Coonhound mix is a little shy at first, but soon shows off her sweet side. She spent the first few minutes exploring the off-leash run, but came trotting over to me after I knelt down on the ground. Queenie likes getting her chin scratched and stretches her neck out to make sure you get the right spot.

Queenie says, “So are you going to pet me now?”

Queenie is pretty mellow. She wasn’t too interested when I threw a tennis ball, she didn’t bark, and she mostly just moseyed around or stood next to me. She’s easy to walk on a leash, too. Queenie gets along well with other dogs and is currently sharing her kennel (see above), so she could go to a home with or without a furry friend. Come to the shelter to meet sweet Queenie!

Orphans of the Storm® Dogs Will Benefit from Your Attendance at the Annual Dinner

The Orphans of the Storm® Annual Benefit Dinner is this upcoming Tuesday, April 18! This year’s theme is “Love Is a Four-Legged Word,” and anyone who has spent time with the dogs and cats at Orphans of the Storm® knows just how true that is. I hope to see lots of you there!

Peony (also known as Pumpkin) the two-year-old Labrador Retriever mix is a sweetie who likes to cuddle and get belly rubs. When we first got to the woodland preserve, Peony sat right at my feet so I would have to pet her before we continued our walk. She quickly rolled over so I could rub her tummy, and looked like she would have been just fine doing that for the rest of our time together! Once we did start walking, though, Peony did a good job on the leash.

Peony is a pretty girl

Peony prefers the company of other women, so she would like to go to a home with just a woman or women. She was friendly to two men who stopped to pet her while we were out, so it’s more about sharing her house. Peony seems fairly submissive and sat down immediately when she was sniffing another dog through the fence. If you’re a lady looking for a new best friend, come in soon to meet Peony!

Brady the two-year-old Basset Hound mix is a nice, easy-going guy. He often gets picked to go to Orphans of the Storm®’s Highland Park location since he’s so well-behaved. Brady gets along well with other dogs and was sharing his kennel with another dog for several weeks before that dog got adopted. If you already have a dog and are looking for a second, Brady might be the right companion!

Brady is always up for a walk

Brady, being a Basset Hound, follows his nose wherever it may lead him. His short and stubby legs move faster than you might expect, but our quick walk around the woodland preserve was often paused so Brady could stop to sniff a tree or bush more thoroughly. Brady has those sweet Hound eyes, but doesn’t seem to do much Hound howling. Be sure to say hello to Brady on your next visit to the shelter.

Dunkin the Red the ten-year-old Staffordshire Bull Terrier/Labrador Retriever mix is a friendly boy. He’s a big fan of doggy hugs, doggy kisses, and cuddling. Whenever I knelt down to his level, Dunkin was right there to put his head in my lap. He also joined me on the bench a few times–and he seemed to like the higher view he got of the woodland preserve while he was up there.

Dunkin the Red is a pretty good walking companion. He only pulled a few times when he was extra excited. Dunkin attends play groups occasionally, but would still probably do best as the only dog in his new home. He’s a fun and active boy who is ready to play. Stop in soon to meet Dunkin the Red!

Mack the four-year-old American English Coonhound mix came from an owner who moved and couldn’t bring Mack with. This means that Mack has a lifetime of experience being a pet and some of the good habits that come along with that, such as already being housebroken. He also gets along with children.

Orphans of the Storm Dogs: Mack Hound 2

Mack enjoying a refreshment

Mack is very much a Hound dog. He was happy to take the lead on our walk around the woodland preserve and did plenty of sniffing. When he saw golfers and golf carts moving on the other side of the fence, he started his Hound howl. (The golfers may not have appreciated the distraction, but I thought it was cute.) Mack would enjoy being in an active home where he can go on plenty of long walks. Visit the shelter soon to see if Mack is the one for you!

Bud the four-year-old Hound/Boxer mix is a sweetie who loves to snuggle. He gave me a quick doggy hug when he first came out of his kennel, and we stopped several times during our walk for a cuddle session. Bud happily joined me on the bench, where he sat down next to me and especially enjoyed getting a nice rub on his chest.

Bud’s happy face

Bud has the cutest little mini-tail that wiggles pretty much constantly. He gets along with other dogs and was sharing his kennel with another dog who has since been adopted, so he could go to a home with or without another furry friend. Bud can pull on the leash a bit when he first comes out of his kennel, but he was a nice walking buddy when we made our way around the woodland preserve. Say hello to Bud on your next visit!

Honey the six-year-old Hound mix is as sweet–or even sweeter!–than her name implies. She likes to give doggy kisses, so much so that when she met a Doberman mix on our walk, she gave him a doggy kiss too! I’ve heard about dogs kissing each other but had never seen it in person, and it was adorable. Honey is sharing her kennel with another dog and seems to get along with pretty much everybody she meets.

Orphans of the Storm Dogs: Honey 1

Honey’s sweet face

Honey is a great walking companion. She walks at a nice pace that isn’t too fast or too slow, doesn’t really pull, and doesn’t do much extended sniffing in any one spot. Honey likes getting her hips scratched and will do a cute little dance when you find the right spot. Stop in soon to meet sweet Honey!

I also saw Bella, Buddy, Carlos, Casper, Chester and Te Amo, Cookie, Gunner, John Boy, Marcus, Nala, O’Shea, Roxy, Sammy, Snowflake, and Spot.
