Orphans of the Storm® Dogs Looking for Fun

There are dogs with all sorts of activity levels at Orphans of the Storm®, but the dogs below are particularly looking to have a good time with a new playful family.

Candice the three-year-old Shepherd mix has been at the shelter for several months, getting treatment for heartworm until she is healthy enough to go to her forever home. And now that time has come! Candice is an active girl who is always up for going on a walk. She quickly led the way to the off-leash run and had a good time exploring. She mostly kept to herself at the beginning, but that’s because she was so happy to be outside.

Candice loves the outdoors, even when it’s cold

Candice warmed up, though, and was eventually covering my face in doggy kisses. I was glad I kept her outside those extra few minutes so she could become more comfortable with me. She is also happy to lean against your legs and snuggle once she gets to know you. Candice would prefer to be the only dog in her new home. If you are interested in adopting Candice, the shelter staff can give you more information on her health status. Stop by soon to meet Candice!

Bootsy the two-year-old Staffordshire Bull Terrier mix is a little shy and nervous right now, but I know there’s a playful pooch in there! Bootsy started out with her tail tucked between her legs and was a little skittish as we made our way to the off-leash run. But I let her do her own thing once we got there, and I could see her start to perk up and get a little more confident.

Bootsy could use some extra treats

Bootsy soon felt comfortable enough for me to pet her without her jumping or taking a step back. She seemed to particularly enjoy getting scratched under the chin. The more she learns that there are nice people who will love her and treat her well, the more she’ll come out of her shell. When there was another dog in the run next to us, Bootsy politely sniffed him and even started wagging her tail a little bit, which was nice to see! Say hello to Bootsy on your next visit to the shelter.

Bootsy is curious about the world around her

Otis the one-year-old Shepherd/Australian Shepherd mix was the most playful of the bunch this week. He is one of those dogs who is perfectly happy to play fetch with himself (but he’ll also play fetch with people if someone is around to play with!). He’ll pick up a tennis ball, shake his head a bit, throw the ball in the air or roll it along the ground, and then start over–all while moving at a fast speed! Otis’ cute little stubby tail just wags and wags and wags.

Otis is a cute boy

Otis seems to get along with everybody, people and other dogs alike. He is currently sharing his kennel with another dog, so he could go to a home with or without a furry friend. Otis loves to give doggy hugs and doggy kisses, and he joined me on the bench a couple of times for a quick cuddle session. Even though he’s energetic, he still walked pretty well on the leash. If you’re looking for a playful new friend, come in soon to meet Otis!

Orphans of the Storm® Dogs Who Give Kisses

If you’re looking for an affectionate new companion, now is the perfect time to come into Orphans of the Storm® and meet some of the dogs who will be more than happy to cover you in doggy kisses.

Batman the five-year-old Border Collie/Labrador Retriever mix has been at the shelter for several months, but now has his clean bill of health and is ready to be adopted! Batman loves going for walks and spending time outside, even when it’s chilly. We quickly made our way to the off-leash run, where Batman enjoyed exploring in the bushes and being able to romp freely.

How can you say no to a face like Batman’s?

Batman was more cuddly once he was back on the leash and less distracted. When I knelt down next to him, he came over to lean against my legs and get a good scratch on the back. His fluffiness makes him an ideal snuggle buddy! Batman isn’t a fan of other dogs, so he would like to be the only dog in his new home. If you’re a one-dog kind of person, come in soon to say hello to Batman!

Nuk the nine-year-old Basset Hound mix is super adorable and lovable. (I admit I have a personal bias towards Basset mixes, but for good reason!) Nuk walks nicely on the leash, which is good because he could use some extra exercise with his new family to shed a couple extra pounds around his middle. Nuk, like most Hounds, spent a lot of his time with his nose to the ground, seeing what might be hiding underneath the snow.

Nuk is just too precious

Nuk is an affectionate boy. When I sat down on the bench, he soon came to join me (he may have stubby legs, but he can still jump!) and gave me plenty of doggy kisses. We sat together on the bench for a while, just enjoying each other’s company. Those sweet brown eyes of his will capture your heart immediately. Be sure to say hi to Nuk on your next visit to the shelter.

Ginger the ten-year-old Labrador Retriever mix (not to be confused with the other Ginger, who is also affectionate!) may be considered a senior, but she still has plenty of pep in her step. When I came to take her out, she was jumping up and down excitedly at the opportunity to go outside. Once she was out of her kennel, though, she calmed down quickly and was a nice walking companion.

Ginger was shining in the sunlight

Ginger did some exploring on her own when we first got to the off-leash run, but after that she was stuck to my side like glue. She hopped up next to me on the bench and gave me doggy kisses every so often while I pet her. Sometimes she would sit next to me, sometimes she would squeeze behind me and lean against my back, and sometimes she put her front paws in my lap to get extra close. What a lovebug! Stop in soon to meet Ginger.

Orphans of the Storm® Dogs on a Wintery Day

It was a bit of a dreary day at Orphans of the Storm®, but the dogs were happy to spend some time outside and stretch their legs in the off-leash run.

Chapo the one-and-a-half-year-old Staffordshire Bull Terrier mix is a playful pup with plenty of energy. He was very eager to come outside and have a chance to romp around. When we got to the off-leash run, Chapo very quickly found a stuffed reindeer toy, picked it up, and ran a few laps. He eventually dropped it so I could pick it up and throw it for him to chase, which he enjoyed. There were a couple of tennis balls in the run also, but Chapo wasn’t too interested in those; he seems to prefer stuffed toys.

Chapo is always on the move (hence the blurriness)

Chapo gets along with some dogs better than others. He was originally sharing his kennel with another dog who has since been adopted, but there were a couple dogs we saw while we were out that got him more wound up than others. Since Chapo is still pretty young, he could definitely benefit from some training. Chapo is an affectionate boy who happily joined me on the bench for some snuggling. If you’re looking for a fun-loving pooch, come in soon to meet Chapo!

Bubba the ten-year-old Cocker Spaniel mix is a super-cute senior looking for a nice home in which he can spend his golden years. Bubba is about as mellow as they come. He walks nicely on the leash, though he does like to stop and sniff every once in a while. When we got to the off-leash run, he took his time exploring and never moved too fast.

Orphans of the Storm Dogs: Bubba CS 1

Bubba not too sure about the snow

Bubba kept to himself at the beginning, but he eventually warmed up and enjoyed getting a good scratch on the back and behind his (curly and adorable) ears. Bubba also seems to like other dogs, based on the way he sniffed and wagged his little tail at the dogs on the other side of the fence. If you’re looking for a sweet companion to add to your family, be sure to say hi to Bubba on your next visit to the shelter!

Bubba is too cute

Angel the nine-year-old Staffordshire Bull Terrier mix might look sort of big and muscle-y, but in fact she is very gentle. Walking her on the leash was easy because she never strayed too far from my side. Angel is another senior dog, so she’s pretty calm and enjoys taking it slow. When we got to the off-leash run, she spent most of her time following her nose through the snow and under the bushes.

Angel says, “Who, me?”

Angel certainly is named appropriately. She’ll stay by your side as long as you’re petting her and might even give you a doggy kiss if you’re lucky! She has quickly become a volunteer favorite because of her sweet disposition. Angel is ready to head to her new forever home and snuggle up with her new family. Stop by soon to meet Angel!

I also saw Bear, Blush, Courage, Jax (Charlie), John Boy (who is an expert at playing fetch with himself), Lexi, and Lisa.

An Orphans of the Storm® Dog Named “Puppy”

There have already been lots of new adoptions at Orphans of the Storm® in the new year! In fact, I only have one new pooch for you to meet today because the other new ones I walked this week have already been adopted.

Puppy the three-year-old chocolate Labrador Retriever mix may not technically be a puppy anymore, but he certainly still acts like he is! Puppy is a boisterous boy who loves to play. When we got to the off-leash run, I tossed a tennis ball for him and he chased right after it. Rather than bringing it back, though, he just ran around with the ball in his mouth and his tail wagging. There were a couple of occasions where Puppy got distracted and dropped the ball, so I could throw it again and he could chase it again. Puppy is always on the move, so I barely even got a picture with all of him in the frame. (Going through the photos was like “There’s Puppy’s tail! And this one has Puppy’s nose! But where is the rest of Puppy?”)

Orphans of the Storm Dogs: Puppy 1

Puppy loves tennis balls

Puppy is also very snuggly. He isn’t shy about giving people doggy hugs, and he loves to get scratched on his back and by his hips. When I sat down on the bench, Puppy kept going under my legs as if they were a back-scratcher. Puppy does this very cute thing: he’ll put his head and front legs on the ground and start to roll over, but he’ll keep his back legs standing while you pet him until he eventually loses his balance and flips all the way over so you can give him a belly rub. This happened multiple times and it made me laugh each time. Puppy will definitely bring a smile to whichever lucky person or people adopt him! On your next visit to the shelter, be sure to say hi to Puppy.

I also saw Bear, Blush, Courage, Diamond, Gypsy, John Boy, Lisa, Showtime, Weezie, Willow, and Zoey.
