Orphans of the Storm® Celebrates Adopt a Shelter Dog Month

This Saturday and Sunday, October 28-29, Orphans of the Storm® is waiving the adoption fee for all dogs to celebrate the end of Adopt a Shelter Dog Month! (The waived fee includes spay/neuter, but costs for final shots still apply.) If you’ve been thinking about adopting a dog but haven’t gotten around to it yet, now is the perfect time to come in and meet some pooches!

Prince the five-year-old Staffordshire Bull Terrier mix is about as ready to go home as any dog could be. Prince is housebroken, knows some commands like “sit” and would be eager to learn more, gets along with children, and walks great on the leash. With all these traits and skills already, your main job would be to make sure Prince gets all the love he deserves!

Orphans of the Storm Dogs: Prince 1

Prince is a good walking buddy

Prince is a friendly boy. He likes getting pet and will give the occasional doggy kiss. He has just the smallest hint of an underbite, which makes him look like he’s pouting, but his wagging tail lets you know how happy he is. We passed a couple dogs during our walk and Prince just gave them a quick glance and kept going. This handsome boy is ready to show you what a great family member he can be. Come in soon to meet Prince!

Orphans of the Storm Dogs: Prince 2

Prince is a real cutie

Bronson the two-year-old Beagle mix is one of the cuddliest dogs. He loves giving doggy hugs and kisses, sitting in your lap, snuggling next to you on the bench, and basically anything else that involves close contact. Whenever I knelt down or stopped walking, Bronson immediately had his paws in my lap. At one point, he would stop walking after just a few feet so I would cuddle with him some more, then walk a few more feet, stop, and repeat.

Orphans of the Storm Dogs: Bronson 1

Bronson’s signature doggy hug

Bronson was also very patient when we put him in a spider costume for his Halloween portrait. We had to stick his floppy ears through the hat multiple times and he never tried to pull away or shake us off. Bronson can be pretty bark-y around other dogs but otherwise was quiet during our time together. Bronson would do best in an adults-only home. If he sounds like the pal for you, come in soon to meet Bronson!

Bronson is always alert on his walks

Nash the two-year-old black Labrador Retriever mix is a big boy. He was super excited to come out for a walk, even though it was raining (hence the blurry photos). Nash walks pretty well on the leash despite his large size, though he can pull occasionally if there is a particular smell he wants to investigate. Nash was also happy to hop up on the bench and take a seat so I could pet him some more.

Orphans of the Storm Dogs: Nash 1

Nash sits like a good boy

Nash didn’t pay any attention to other dogs when they passed us during our walk, except for a quick look to see who was coming. Being a Lab, Nash showed some interest in a tennis ball when we were in the off-leash run. Mostly he just liked exploring and coming back to me for more pats on the back. Nash can be a little hesitant around men and seems to prefer the company of women, so he might do best in a home with only women or with a laid-back man. Stop in soon to see if Nash is the one for you!

Nash doesn’t mind a little rain

I also saw Bella, Big Boy and Mojo, Carlos, Delilah, Hamilton, Harley and Reeco, Kaffee, LuckyLucy, Thunder, Tyson, and Vanilla.

Orphans of the Storm® Sweetie-Pie Dogs

If you are particularly interested in snuggly, cuddly dogs, now is a good time to stop by Orphans of the Storm®! Small dogs aren’t the only ones who can be lapdogs–there are plenty of big dogs who are ready to hop into your lap too!

Hamilton the 10-month-old Great Dane mix gave me a doggy hug as soon as he came out of his kennel, which was more like a human hug because Hamilton is as tall as a person when he’s standing on his back legs. Hamilton can be a bit of a handful when he first comes out and likes to chew on the leash a bit, but he settles down once you start on your walk. Since he’s still a puppy, it’s only understandable that he has plenty of energy.

Orphans of the Storm Dogs: Hamilton 1

Hamilton is plenty perky!

Hamilton is a fun boy. He likes to chase toys, though he hasn’t fully grasped the concept of “fetch” yet and just likes carrying the toys around in his mouth. Hamilton is under the impression that he is a lapdog, even though only a small portion of him can fit in a person’s lap. He’s also happy to give doggy kisses while he’s sitting on you. Hamilton would do best in an adult home. If you’re looking for a tall, dark, and handsome guy, come in soon to meet Hamilton!

Orphans of the Storm Dogs: Hamilton 2

Hamilton will be happy to join his future family on the couch

Tyson the one-year-old Labrador Retriever mix is the most snuggly pup. I first met him three weeks ago, when he was too scared to walk on the leash so he just cuddled in my lap the whole time. This week, he was much more confident and happy to lead the way around the woodland preserve! Tyson walks nicely on the leash and also seems to get along with most other dogs.

Orphans of the Storm Dogs: Tyson Lab 1

Tyson has the cutest face when he’s enjoying a belly rub

Tyson loves belly rubs and sitting in people’s laps. Any time you sit or kneel, Tyson thinks that is an invitation to literally flop onto you. He will very contentedly stay in your lap until you move. He also sometimes stops in the middle of walking and sits on your feet so you can pet him some more. Tyson will need an extra loving home to help him come out of his shell even more. If you’re looking for an extra lovey-dovey dog, be sure to say hello to Tyson!

Orphans of the Storm Dogs: Tyson Lab 2

Tyson will never be far from your side

Artemis the four-year-old Doberman Pinscher mix likes being close to his person. The first thing he did when he came out of his kennel was nuzzle his head against my leg. When we were on our walk around the woodland preserve, Artemis sometimes walked so close to me that his side was touching my leg. A natural heeler! Artemis does a great job on the leash overall and didn’t pull at all.

Orphans of the Storm Dogs: Artemis 1

Artemis exploring the run

Artemis seems like a pretty mellow guy. When we were in the off-leash run, he just meandered around and sniffed. He wasn’t too interested in toys when we were together. Artemis likes getting pet, especially on the side of his neck, and he’ll lean into your hand so you get the right spot. Artemis didn’t seem too fond of other dogs we passed, but it was easy enough to redirect his attention. Come in soon to see if Artemis is the one for you!

Orphans of the Storm Dogs: Artemis 2

Artemis is handsome

Balto the seven-year-old Husky mix is such a handsome boy. I have heard multiple people say “Wow” when they see him. He has bright blue eyes and a particularly majestic look. Balto gave me a doggy hug right away when he came out of his kennel, and gave me a couple more when we were out and about. Balto particularly enjoys getting his hips scratched and will do a little dance for you.

Orphans of the Storm Dogs: Balto 1

Balto smiles during snuggle time

Balto is a good walking companion. He prefers to go at a faster pace, but doesn’t pull at all. Whenever I stopped walking, he would stop too and sit at my feet so I could pet him. We had a nice time sitting next to each other, just enjoying the outdoors. Balto would do best in an adult home with an experienced dog owner who knows what his breed needs. If that sounds like you, stop by soon to say hello to Balto!

I also saw Bella, Big Boy and Mojo, Bo, Carlos, Diamond, Goliath, Harley and Reeco, Kaffee, Scotty, and Wombat.

Orphans of the Storm® Dogs Hope You’ll #FindYourFido

October is Adopt a Shelter Dog Month, and the ASPCA has started the #FindYourFido campaign to help get more dogs adopted. Come to Orphans of the Storm® this month (and every other month!) to meet your new Fido.

Bo the seven-year-old Labrador Retriever mix is a good boy. He makes a great walking companion because he moves at a nice pace and doesn’t pull on the leash. Bo is also happy to take breaks during his walk so he can get pet. Whenever I knelt down to his level, Bo came over and snuggled up next to me.

Orphans of the Storm Dogs: Bo Lab 1

Bo enjoying the fall sunshine

Bo likes following his nose, even when it leads him into grasses or bushes that are taller than he is. Bo isn’t a huge fan of other dogs, but if he’s just passing them during his walk, he doesn’t pay much attention to them and just keeps walking. He attends play group with certain dogs and has made some furry friends, but still isn’t too fond of others. Bo is a sweet boy looking for a comfy lap where he can rest his head. Come in soon to meet Bo!

Bo is a happy guy

Goliath the five-year-old Great Pyrenees mix is a giant fluffball. Because of his size, he can pull on the leash and you have to be ready to go in the direction he wants! Overall, though, he does a pretty good job on the leash and just prefers to move at a faster pace. Goliath enjoyed playing with a sheep-shaped doggy toy (appropriate for his breed’s history).

Orphans of the Storm Dogs: Goliath 1

Goliath’s big fluffy face

Goliath is easy-going when it comes to maintaining his appearance, which is good because he’ll need lots of grooming to keep his fur soft and fluffy. Goliath stood perfectly still while I picked out some burs, twigs, and leaves that his fur had picked up during our walk. Goliath enjoys a nice scratch between the ears and on his back. He isn’t a fan of other dogs, particularly smaller dogs, so he would do best as the only dog in his new home. But with a dog the size of Goliath, one is plenty! Come in soon to see if he’s the one for you.

Snowball the seven-year-old American Eskimo mix is so cute and so sweet. She’s like a little cotton ball! Snowball has the softest fur I have felt in a long time, and she’s perfectly content to let you pet her as long as you’d like. She’s great at walking on the leash and is also super attentive. She would stop and look up at me every once in a while during our walk to make sure we were on the same page.

Orphans of the Storm Dogs: Snowball 1

Snowball’s little fluffy face

Snowball will happily put her front paws in your lap or curl up next to you while you’re sitting down. We had a nice, relaxing time together when she jumped up on the bench next to me and laid down. We could have sat there all afternoon! Snowball also doesn’t seem to mind other dogs. She politely sniffed one during our walk and didn’t pay attention to the other ones we passed. If you’re looking for a sweet little lapdog, come in soon to meet Snowball!

Diamond the four-year-old Staffordshire Bull Terrier mix (not to be confused with the other Diamond/Riley) can be a little hyper when she first comes out of her kennel, but she settles down. She gets excited and wants to play tug-of-war with the leash, but as soon as you start walking she stops and is just happy to be out and about.

Orphans of the Storm Dogs: Diamond SBT 1

Diamond coming over for a cuddle

Diamond prefers to walk at a quick pace or jog, so she’ll be happy to go home with someone who will take her on plenty of walks. But Diamond is always up for taking a break from her walk so she can get some snuggles. Diamond put her front paws in my lap and stood on her back legs so I could pet her some more. This fun and happy girl is looking for a fun and happy home! Be sure to say hi to Diamond on your next visit to the shelter.

I also saw Bella, Big Boy and Mojo, Buddy, Carlos, Clarinet, Constance, Harley and Reeco, Jake, Kaffee, Lucky, Lucy, Thunder (who knows sit, paw, and down commands), and Whizzer.

Orphans of the Storm® Big and Biggest Dogs

If you are looking for a big best friend, now is the time to come to Orphans of the Storm®! There are lots of big breeds eager to meet you and show you that extra size = extra love.

Jake the nine-year-old Australian Shepherd/Labrador Retriever mix came from owners who could no longer keep him. This means he has plenty of experience being a pet and is ready to settle into a new home. Despite his giant size, Jake is great at walking on the leash and doesn’t pull at all. He gets along with kids, so he could go home with a young family, but he isn’t a fan of cats.

Orphans of the Storm Dogs: Jake 1

Jake enjoys his walks

Jake loves getting pet. We took many cuddle breaks during our walk around the woodland preserve and Jake would tuck his head into my lap while I pet him. This boy has a lot of fluff, so he’s extra great for snuggling. Jake has unique coloring and he also has one blue eye. If you think Jake has enough fluff for you, come in soon to meet him!

Orphans of the Storm Dogs: Jake 2

Jake is very attentive to his person

Calhoun the one-year-old Redbone Coonhound/Bloodhound mix likes to spend a lot of his time sniffing, which is understandable for a Hound dog. I thought Calhoun would be the type to want to run all the way around the woodland preserve, but in fact Calhoun is an easy-going walking buddy who likes to go at a slower pace so he can catch all the good smells.

Orphans of the Storm Dogs: Calhoun 2

Calhoun’s sweet Hound eyes

Calhoun is a sweet boy. When I knelt down to pet him, he put his nose right up to mine and enjoyed getting the attention. Calhoun was in a foster home for a while and has experience with kids, other dogs, and cats. He is also housebroken and crate trained. So now all he needs to complete the package is a new home! If you think Calhoun might be the one for you, stop in soon to say hello!

Daisy Mae the three-year-old Heeler (Australian Cattle Dog) mix has some bursts of energy and excitement. The first thing she did when she came out of her kennel was give me a doggy hug. Then we were off and running! But Daisy Mae settled down soon after we got to the woodland preserve trail and ended up being a nice walking companion.

Orphans of the Storm Dogs: Daisy Mae 1

Daisy Mae looking sassy

Daisy Mae is a good girl who often gets picked to go to off-site events. She likes to sniff and explore when she’s out on a walk. Daisy Mae gets along with some dogs (she was previously sharing her kennel with Whizzer), but not all dogs. She’ll be a fun and enthusiastic companion for her future owners. Be sure to say hi to Daisy Mae on your next visit!

Orphans of the Storm Dogs: Daisy Mae 2

Ernesto the four-year-old Great Pyrenees mix is super sweet and mellow, which makes sense given his breed. Wherever we went, Ernesto was calm and steady. He didn’t pay any attention to the other dogs we passed during our walk. He does a great job on the leash and didn’t pull at all.

Orphans of the Storm Dogs: Ernesto 1

Ernesto being a good walking buddy

Ernesto likes to give doggy kisses. Whenever I knelt down to pet him, he would reciprocate with a kiss on the nose. He has an adorably sweet face that still looks a little puppy-ish. Ernesto’s fur isn’t at its full fluffiness at the moment, but he’s still plenty soft, especially around his ears. If you’re looking for an easy-going pooch, look no further than Ernesto!

Orphans of the Storm Dogs: Ernesto 2

Ernesto is always up for a good side-scratch

Tank the four-year-old Mastiff mix is unintentionally funny. Here you have this giant dog, descended from serious guard dogs, and yet he gets spooked by little things like falling leaves! Once he’s settled into his new home, Tank will live up to his name and get more confident. But even though he can be a little skittish, Tank is still very sweet. He greeted me with a wagging tail and was eager to come out for a walk.

Orphans of the Storm Dogs: Tank 2

Tank is a happy guy

Tank walks nicely on the leash overall, but because of his size he can unintentionally pull if he wants to go in a particular direction. Two young girls came over to pet him, and Tank enjoyed their company and sniffed their faces politely. Tank likes to follow his nose, and mostly kept his nose to the ground during our walk. This big boy is a big softie. Come in soon to say hello to Tank!

I also saw Bella, Belle, Big Boy and Mojo, Buster, Constance, Harley and Reeco, Thunder, Tucker, and Vanilla.
