Orphans of the Storm® Dogs with Whom You Can “Fall” in Love

The cooler fall weather means it’s time to bring a new, cuddly companion into your home! Make an appointment to visit Orphans of the Storm® soon and meet the cute and affectionate dogs available for adoption.

Smiley the three-year-old Pit Bull Terrier is a lovable low-rider. He often looks very serious, but when he does give a doggy smile, you can see why he got his name! You can’t help but smile back. Smiley is a very easy walking companion, in that he moves slowly in order to thoroughly sniff everything and generally doesn’t want to walk too far. He prefers roaming around the yard at his own pace.

Smiley has the cutest body shape, with his short legs and giant face

Smiley greets new people politely and especially enjoys getting his hips scratched. He wriggles around happily when you scratch the right spot. Smiley regularly attends play group and does well with other dogs, though not always with larger males like himself. He can actively play with the more rambunctious dogs, but gets along with calmer dogs too, so Smiley could go to a home with or without another dog. If you’re looking for a new companion to make you smile every day, come in soon to meet Smiley!

Smiley wasn’t feeling so smiley during our photoshoot

Gumball the two-year-old Pit Bull Terrier mix is a big, active boy. He gets the zoomies when he’s first let off-leash in the yard and happily runs a few laps before settling down to a slower walk and sniffing around to explore. Gumball loves toys and likes to have a variety of toy options to choose from. He alternates between chasing after them when you throw them and carrying them in his mouth while he walks around.

Gumball has a great smile

Gumball can be very strong when he wants to be, so a front-clip harness would probably be your friend if you’re the one to bring him home. He walks nicely on the leash once he gets his initial energy out, though. Gumball was content to take breaks as we made our way around the trail so I could pet him, and he particularly enjoys getting his sides scratched. If you’re looking for an active playmate, be sure to say hello to Gumball on your next visit to the shelter!

Gumball following his nose

Noelle the nine-year-old Husky mix is a volunteer favorite because she is so mellow, sweet, and easy-going. She’s probably the easiest dog to walk at the shelter right now, and she loves going for walks–when she finishes her first loop of the trail, she often starts heading in the direction of a second loop instead of heading back to her kennel. Noelle also enjoys spending time off-leash in the yard and meanders at her own pace, but comes back to whichever person is with her to get some chin scratches.

Noelle is a happy girl

Noelle does great with other dogs and attends play group every day. When she wants to play with a certain dog, she pokes them with her front paw. Noelle could go to a home with or without another dog. She could also go to a home with older children who understand she’s a senior and won’t jump all over her or be too loud around her. Noelle has been getting treated for a couple medical issues, but is now healthy enough to go to her forever home. She’s just looking for an understanding and accommodating home. If you’ve been thinking about adopting a senior, come in soon to meet Noelle!

Noelle is getting her fluff back for winter

Otter the three-year-old Hound mix is very sweet and affectionate. When you scratch his back and hips, he turns his head around to lick your hands. He’s also a leaner and will lean against your legs as long as you’re petting him. Otter likes to jump up a lot as if he were going to give a doggy hug, but he doesn’t actually make contact. It’s more like (hop) “Hi!” (hop) “Here I am!” (hop) “Got anything for me?” Then he stops hopping when you pet him or give him a toy.

Otter is very attentive to his person

Speaking of toys, Otter loves them. He is excellent at playing fetch. Otter runs after the toy, picks it up, brings it back, chews it for a few seconds, drops it at your feet, and patiently waits for you to throw it again. Otter is also a good walking buddy. He walks at a brisk pace but doesn’t pull on the leash. He isn’t a fan of other dogs, though, so he will pull a bit if he sees another dog coming. Otter would probably do best as the only dog in his new home. If you’re looking for a dog who is equal parts active and snuggly, stop by the shelter soon to meet Otter!

Otter was ready for his close-up

Bjork the six-year-old Pit Bull Terrier mix is a sweetheart. She gave me a doggy hug as soon as she came out of her kennel and was much more interested in snuggling than walking. She joined me on the bench whenever I sat down and, since the majority of my face was covered from my mask and my hat, Bjork decided to cover my neck in doggy kisses instead. She also loves belly rubs and will not-very-gracefully flop onto her back to request one.

Bjork likes toys and belly rubs simultaneously

Bjork can keep herself entertained with toys. She especially likes stuffed squeaky toys, and will either play fetch with you or with herself. Bjork walks great on the leash 99% of the time, but she will dart after squirrels and chipmunks so you want to make sure you’re holding onto her leash properly. Bjork can play with other rambunctious dogs in play group, but can be too much for calmer dogs. She could go to a family home with children over 10. If that sounds like you, be sure to say hello to Bjork on your next visit to the shelter!

Bjork has the cutest perky ears

Tesoro the four-year-old Pit Bull Terrier mix is a sweet boy with a gentle expression. He picked up the first toy he saw and carried it with him as we made our way to the off-leash yard. He likes to sniff at toys and carry them around, but wasn’t too interested in playing fetch during this outing. Tesoro came over to me to get some pets and stood politely at my side. He also put his front paws on the bench next to me when I sat down and enjoyed getting chin and chest scratches.

Tesoro has such a sweet face

Tesoro walks at a slow, easy pace the majority of the time and likes to take his time sniffing along the ground, but he can be strong and pull when there’s a particular direction he wants to go. He enjoys roaming around the yard and following his nose. Tesoro prefers to be with calmer, mellower dogs in play group. Since he’s a big boy, Tesoro would do best in a home with children over 10. Stop by the shelter soon to see if Tesoro is the one for you!

Tesoro likes to stop and smell all the plants

Crash the seven-year-old Cardigan Welsh Corgi/Chihuahua mix is super cute and cuddly. She joined me on the bench as soon as I sat down and just wanted to be pet. When I stopped petting her, she poked my hand with her front paw a couple times to let me know I should continue. Crash didn’t get off the bench until I stood up, so we probably could have sat there together all afternoon.

Crash sticking out her tongue

Crash is a perfect leash-walking companion. She stayed right by my side the entire way around the trail and went at whichever pace I did. When passing other dogs, she usually ignores them if they ignore her but will pull and bark if the other dog is also pulling and barking. Crash would prefer to be the only dog in her new home. Even though she’s small, she has more than enough to offer her new family. Be sure to say hello to Crash on your next visit to the shelter!

Crash exploring the yard

Travis the five-year-old Pit Bull Terrier mix is a big snuggler. He loves to get his back and hips scratched and turns his head around to lick your hands while you do so. He likes to give doggy hugs and will also sit at your feet while you scratch his chin and neck, with his tail wagging the entire time. With a little encouragement, Travis hopped up onto the bench next to me and poked my mask with his nose.

Travis has the best forehead wrinkles

Travis likes having different toy options, but he mostly pokes at them with his front paw and his nose and only chews on them a little bit. He walks nicely on the leash for the most part, though he will pull towards squirrels and chipmunks if they run across his path. Travis plays well with other dogs in play group, so he has the potential to go to a home with another dog. Come in soon to see if Travis is the pooch for you!

Orphans of the Storm® Dogs to Take on Walks

If you’re looking for a new companion to get you out of the house and moving, Orphans of the Storm® has lots of dogs ready to be your new walking buddy!

Nyla the two-year-old Pit Bull Terrier mix is super sweet. She likes to give very gentle doggy kisses and lean against your legs so you can pet her. When you scratch her sides, she does a happy wiggle and looks up at you with a big doggy smile. Nyla is a perfect walking companion. She walks at an easy, steady pace and never pulls on the leash. She occasionally likes to pause and sniff around, but keeps moving for the most part.

Orphans of the Storm Dogs: Nyla 1

Nyla is happiest with a toy

Nyla loves toys, especially soft squeaky toys. She happily chases after a toy when you throw it, and then chews on it to hear the squeaker. Nyla also likes when you play tug-of-war with her. Nyla attends play group almost every day and loves playing with the other dogs. She could go to a home with or without another dog, and could also be a family dog for children. Nyla has some food allergies and will need to follow a special diet. Be sure to say hello to Nyla on your next visit to the shelter!

Orphans of the Storm Dogs: Nyla 2

Nyla spying on the laundry room

Ella the four-year-old Mastiff/Husky mix is very gentle, despite her large size. She likes to take her time meandering around the yard, stopping and sniffing and watching cars drive by. Ella sniffed at some of the toys in the yard, but wasn’t interested in playing with any of them on this particular outing. Ella has lots of fluff and will need regular brushing, and she politely stands still while her tufts of excess fur are brushed out.

Orphans of the Storm Dogs: Ella Mastiff Husky 2

Ella has one pretty blue eye and one pretty brown eye

Ella does very nicely on the leash. She walks just a few steps ahead and doesn’t pull at all. Where Ella really shines is in play group. She is a play group rockstar and can adapt to all play styles, from the gentle and dainty dogs to the rough and rowdy dogs. Ella has a long list of doggy friends. This means she could go to a home with or without another dog. If you’re looking for a big but gentle fluffball, come in soon to meet Ella!

Orphans of the Storm Dogs: Ella Mastiff Husky 1

Hero the six-year-old Australian Cattle Dog (Blue Heeler) mix is super affectionate. He gave me a doggy hug as soon as he came out of his kennel, as if we were already old friends. He also gave me some doggy kisses and wanted to snuggle every time I knelt down to his level. Hero likes toys and gently picks them up to carry them around the yard. He prefers to lead the way on walks and can occasionally pull when he wants to walk faster, but overall is a good walking buddy.

Orphans of the Storm Dogs: Hero 1

Hero romping in the Enrichment Park

Hero is looking for an experienced Cattle Dog owner who knows how to properly channel his energy and intelligence. He is food-motivated and eager to learn new tricks. Hero is not a fan of other dogs, so he is looking for a home where he can be your one-and-only. And since Cattle Dogs are known for herding anything, Hero would also do best in a home without young children. If that sounds like you, come in soon to meet Hero!

Orphans of the Storm Dogs: Hero 2

Hero is very attentive

Jace the three-year-old Pit Bull Terrier mix is a big, handsome boy. He was very mellow in the yard and slowly followed his nose around as he explored. He didn’t even notice when I threw a toy in his direction! When I sat down on the bench, he immediately came over and sat at my feet so I could pet him. Jace also has a tickly spot on his neck that he especially likes to have scratched while he kicks his back leg.

Orphans of the Storm Dogs: Jace 2

Jace knows how to turn on the charm

Jace can sometimes pull a bit on the leash if there’s a particular direction he wants to go, but in general he was happy to stay by me. He climbed into an empty puppy pool and snuffled around, so maybe he would also enjoy splashing around a puppy pool with water in it. Jace regularly attends play group and could go to a home with or without another dog. Stop in soon to say hello to Jace!

Orphans of the Storm Dogs: Jace 1

Jace coming over for a snuggle

Princess the four-year-old Pit Bull Terrier mix is very sweet. She is a super easy walking companion–she stops when you stop, goes when you go, and keeps pace with you whether you’re walking faster or slower. Sometimes she walked so close to my side that I was worried about stepping on her paws! Even when she was off-leash in the Enrichment Park, Princess just followed me around and was rarely more than an arm’s length away.

Orphans of the Storm Dogs: Princess PBT 2

Princess was a little concerned about the coming thunderstorm

Princess loves to get lots of pets and scratches. Whether it’s her back, chin, chest, or neck–she’s always happy to get attention. And she’ll gladly give you some doggy kisses in return. Princess enjoys treats and takes them gently. She poked a toy with her nose but wasn’t too interested in playing. Come by the shelter soon to meet Princess!

Orphans of the Storm Dogs: Princess PBT 1

Princess has the sweetest eyes

I also saw Boon and Delilah (who loved splashing around in the puppy pool).

Orphans of the Storm® Dogs Wish You a Merry Christmas

There is still time to welcome home a new furry family member before the holidays! Orphans of the Storm® is open its regular 11am-5pm hours except for Tuesday, Christmas Day, when it is closed. Dogs and cats will also be at the Northbrook Court location to help with last-minute gift wrapping all weekend and through 6 p.m. on December 24.

Blue the three-year-old Staffordshire Bull Terrier mix is super snuggly. He likes to sit in your lap and lean against you while you pet him. Every time I knelt down to Blue’s level, he came bounding over for more cuddles. He has a ticklish spot on his hips and will do a little wiggly dance and kick his back legs when you scratch him there. Blue likes to give the occasional doggy kiss too.

Orphans of the Storm Dogs: Blue SBT 2

Blue ready to go for a walk

Blue is also adventurous. He went right over the A-frame without any prompting from me and particularly liked standing at the top so he could survey the land and see over the top of the fence. Blue politely sniffed the dog on the other side of the fence but otherwise didn’t pay much attention to other dogs. Blue also does a pretty good job walking on the leash. Be sure to say hello to Blue on your next visit to the shelter!

Orphans of the Storm Dogs: Blue SBT 1

Blue is a natural at the A-frame

Tulip the three-year-old Husky mix will be your own personal giant snowball for the winter (and every other season). She has beautiful all-white fur and piercing blue eyes. Tulip is a little on the chunky side, so she’s looking for an active home where she can get her regular walks and exercise. Tulip prefers to walk at a quick pace, but doesn’t pull on the leash at all as long as you’re keeping up with her.

Orphans of the Storm Dogs: Tulip Husky 1

Tulip is ready for the next snowfall

Tulip is pretty mellow and easy-going. She doesn’t mind doing her own thing when she’s in the yard, but she’ll also stand by your side while you pet her. Tulip was sharing her kennel with another Husky who has since been adopted, and she seems to get along with other dogs too, so she could go to a home with or without another fluffy friend. Come in soon to meet Tulip!

Orphans of the Storm Dogs: Tulip Husky 2

Tulip could be a model

Romeo the two-year-old Staffordshire Bull Terrier mix was found as a stray, but seems to know at least a few of the ropes. He can pull a bit when he first comes out of his kennel, but walking around the woodland preserve he did a good job on the leash. Romeo likes to lead the way on his walks, but often looked back over his shoulder to check in with me.

Orphans of the Storm Dogs: Romeo 2

Look at Romeo’s innocent face!

Romeo likes being with people and rarely left my side when we were in the Enrichment Park. He loves getting attention and lots of pets. Romeo can jump up a fair bit, but some training should help with that. He was already pretty responsive when I told him “off.” Come in soon to see if handsome Romeo will steal your heart!

Orphans of the Storm Dogs: Romeo 1

Romeo getting some exercise

Daisy the three-year-old Treeing Walker Coonhound mix is perhaps the Hound-iest Hound I’ve ever walked. She was really in her element when we were in the woodland preserve. Daisy wanted to forge her own trail rather than follow the path, and can be a little stubborn about following her nose rather than her person. She did some serious treeing, with her front paws on the tree trunk and long, loud baying. (I personally didn’t see any raccoons, but she had me pretty convinced they were up there somewhere.)

Orphans of the Storm Dogs: Daisy TWC 2

Daisy demonstrating the appropriate treeing technique

Daisy has plenty of energy and enjoyed having a chance to stretch her legs and run around the off-leash run. She didn’t need a toy to chase or a dog to race–she just likes being outside. Daisy would do best in an active home that understands what Hounds do. If that sounds like you, be sure to say hello to Daisy on your next visit to the shelter!

I also saw Barney, Carlos, Dunkin the Red (who greeted me with a doggy hug), Nash, Phantom, and Vanilla (who is best friends with the aforementioned Carlos).

Orphans of the Storm® Dogs Are Super!

Looking for a super companion to join you for the Super Bowl this Sunday? There’s still time to come in and meet the perfect dog for you at Orphans of the Storm®!

Red the seven-year-old Hound mix was a little shy and hesitant at first, but once we hit the trail he really perked up. You can tell that he’s a true Hound dog because he always kept his nose to the ground and wanted to forge his own path through the trees and brush rather than following the actual trail. Red may be on the skinny side at the moment, but he still has plenty of energy and endurance.

Orphans of the Storm Dogs: Red Hound 1

Red in his element

Red is pretty easy-going. He can walk past other dogs without giving them a second glance, but also politely sniffed another smaller dog we passed. Red enjoyed exploring the off-leash run and also did some racing with the dog on the other side of the fence. Come in soon to see if Red is the one for you!

Orphans of the Storm Dogs: Red Hound 2

Red wondering, “Who’s over there?”

Jacques the two-year-old Border Collie mix is a friendly guy. He greets every person he sees with a doggy hug and wagging tail. He’s also eager to give out doggy kisses. Jacques joined me on the bench a couple times and happily stood by my side so I could pet him. He was glad to have the opportunity to bound around the off-leash run for a bit at first, and sniffed at some of the toys. (We didn’t get a chance to try fetch yet.)

Orphans of the Storm Dogs: Jacques 1

Jacques being a good walking buddy

Jacques did a pretty good job walking on the leash around the woodland preserve. He would stop and sniff, then get a burst of energy and run for a short distance, and then settle into a nice walking pace. He would love to be part of an active family. Jacques is one of those dogs who truly looks like he’s smiling, and he’ll make his new family smile too! Be sure to say hello to Jacques on your next visit to the shelter.

Orphans of the Storm Dogs: Jacques 2

Jacques smiling for the camera

Quinn the seven-year-old Mountain Cur mix is such a sweetie. He’s a little bigger than what you would normally consider a “lapdog,” but Quinn’s favorite place is in his person’s lap. He joined me on the bench, put his front paws in my lap, and stayed there for a long time–even after I asked if he wanted to go for a walk! Quinn just enjoyed being in the fresh air, relaxing, and watching cars drive by.

Orphans of the Storm Dogs: Quinn 1

Quinn tried to sniff as high as his neck could stretch

Quinn and I did eventually go on our walk, and Quinn walks nicely on the leash. He didn’t pull at all, which makes sense with his mellow personality. He would stop and sniff occasionally, but mostly stayed close to my side. Quinn gets along with other dogs and sometimes attends play group, though he is a fence-climber and lets us know when he’s ready to head back inside by jumping over the fence (so he will need supervision in his future yard). Come in soon to say hello to Quinn!

Orphans of the Storm Dogs: Quinn 2

Quinn is a cuddler

Petey the ten-month-old Carolina Dog/Shepherd mix is all puppy. This means he still explores the world with his mouth. He nibbled on the leash, my gloves, my headband, and wood chips. The good news is he’s pretty good about dropping things also and let me take the wood chips right out of his mouth. Petey also walks surprisingly well on the leash, considering he probably doesn’t have much experience or training.

Orphans of the Storm Dogs: Petey Puppy 1

Not pictured: The black spot on the back of each of Petey’s ears

Petey has that irresistible puppy enthusiasm and will give you doggy kisses for as long as you let him. He also likes to give doggy hugs and will try his best to jump into your lap whenever he gets the opportunity. Puppy joy is contagious, so you can’t help but feel happy when you’re with Petey. Petey gets along with other dogs and is currently sharing his kennel with Tucker (see below). If you’re looking to add a puppy to your home, be sure to say hello to Petey!

Orphans of the Storm Dogs: Petey Puppy 2

Petey somehow looks a little like a bunny

Tucker the one-year-old Labrador Retriever/Mountain Cur mix is a velcro dog. His side was literally touching my leg when we were walking, even when he first came out of his kennel (usually the dogs want to start running when they first get out). Tucker is very attentive and kept looking up at me while we were walking.

Orphans of the Storm Dogs: Tucker Lab Mountain Cur 1

Tucker was a little unsure of the pebbles

Tucker is sweet and affectionate. He gave me some doggy kisses and also licked my hand while I was petting him. Tucker has a beautiful brindle coat and a sweet face. He gets along with other dogs and is currently sharing his kennel with Petey (see above). Tucker also gets along with cats. Come in soon to meet Tucker!

Orphans of the Storm Dogs: Tucker Lab Mountain Cur 2

Tucker is a sweetheart

Sadie the eight-year-old Husky mix came from a family who could no longer afford to care for her. But since she has a lifetime of experience as a family pet, that means she is already housebroken and gets along with children. Her previous owners described her as gentle and passive. Sadie takes a little time to warm up to new people, but she did eventually hop up on the bench next to me so I could pet her.

Orphans of the Storm Dogs: Sadie Husky 1

Sadie says, “Hello there!”

Sadie is a stereotypical Husky when she’s outside. She loves to be active and go for runs, and quickly led the way around the woodland preserve. She did occasionally stop to sniff. Sadie would enjoy having a fenced-in yard, but Huskies are known escape artists so her new family would need to supervise her when she’s out. If you’re looking for a new companion as well as a new running buddy, stop by soon to meet Sadie!

Orphans of the Storm Dogs: Sadie Husky 2

Sadie is a pretty girl

I also saw Bella, Blush (who greeted me with a doggy hug), Clarinet, Dexter, Eve, Goliath, Hamilton, Nash, Thunder, Whizzer, and Wombat.

Orphans of the Storm® Sweetie-Pie Dogs

If you are particularly interested in snuggly, cuddly dogs, now is a good time to stop by Orphans of the Storm®! Small dogs aren’t the only ones who can be lapdogs–there are plenty of big dogs who are ready to hop into your lap too!

Hamilton the 10-month-old Great Dane mix gave me a doggy hug as soon as he came out of his kennel, which was more like a human hug because Hamilton is as tall as a person when he’s standing on his back legs. Hamilton can be a bit of a handful when he first comes out and likes to chew on the leash a bit, but he settles down once you start on your walk. Since he’s still a puppy, it’s only understandable that he has plenty of energy.

Orphans of the Storm Dogs: Hamilton 1

Hamilton is plenty perky!

Hamilton is a fun boy. He likes to chase toys, though he hasn’t fully grasped the concept of “fetch” yet and just likes carrying the toys around in his mouth. Hamilton is under the impression that he is a lapdog, even though only a small portion of him can fit in a person’s lap. He’s also happy to give doggy kisses while he’s sitting on you. Hamilton would do best in an adult home. If you’re looking for a tall, dark, and handsome guy, come in soon to meet Hamilton!

Orphans of the Storm Dogs: Hamilton 2

Hamilton will be happy to join his future family on the couch

Tyson the one-year-old Labrador Retriever mix is the most snuggly pup. I first met him three weeks ago, when he was too scared to walk on the leash so he just cuddled in my lap the whole time. This week, he was much more confident and happy to lead the way around the woodland preserve! Tyson walks nicely on the leash and also seems to get along with most other dogs.

Orphans of the Storm Dogs: Tyson Lab 1

Tyson has the cutest face when he’s enjoying a belly rub

Tyson loves belly rubs and sitting in people’s laps. Any time you sit or kneel, Tyson thinks that is an invitation to literally flop onto you. He will very contentedly stay in your lap until you move. He also sometimes stops in the middle of walking and sits on your feet so you can pet him some more. Tyson will need an extra loving home to help him come out of his shell even more. If you’re looking for an extra lovey-dovey dog, be sure to say hello to Tyson!

Orphans of the Storm Dogs: Tyson Lab 2

Tyson will never be far from your side

Artemis the four-year-old Doberman Pinscher mix likes being close to his person. The first thing he did when he came out of his kennel was nuzzle his head against my leg. When we were on our walk around the woodland preserve, Artemis sometimes walked so close to me that his side was touching my leg. A natural heeler! Artemis does a great job on the leash overall and didn’t pull at all.

Orphans of the Storm Dogs: Artemis 1

Artemis exploring the run

Artemis seems like a pretty mellow guy. When we were in the off-leash run, he just meandered around and sniffed. He wasn’t too interested in toys when we were together. Artemis likes getting pet, especially on the side of his neck, and he’ll lean into your hand so you get the right spot. Artemis didn’t seem too fond of other dogs we passed, but it was easy enough to redirect his attention. Come in soon to see if Artemis is the one for you!

Orphans of the Storm Dogs: Artemis 2

Artemis is handsome

Balto the seven-year-old Husky mix is such a handsome boy. I have heard multiple people say “Wow” when they see him. He has bright blue eyes and a particularly majestic look. Balto gave me a doggy hug right away when he came out of his kennel, and gave me a couple more when we were out and about. Balto particularly enjoys getting his hips scratched and will do a little dance for you.

Orphans of the Storm Dogs: Balto 1

Balto smiles during snuggle time

Balto is a good walking companion. He prefers to go at a faster pace, but doesn’t pull at all. Whenever I stopped walking, he would stop too and sit at my feet so I could pet him. We had a nice time sitting next to each other, just enjoying the outdoors. Balto would do best in an adult home with an experienced dog owner who knows what his breed needs. If that sounds like you, stop by soon to say hello to Balto!

Orphans of the Storm Dogs: Balto 2

I also saw Bella, Big Boy and Mojo, Bo, Carlos, Diamond, Goliath, Harley and Reeco, Kaffee, Scotty, and Wombat.

Orphans of the Storm® Dogs Enjoy a Sunshiny Day

It was a great day to be out and about. Lots of the dogs at Orphans of the Storm® were soaking up the sun while waiting for their turn to go for a walk.

Lobo the four-year-old Husky mix is more sociable and friendly than the average Husky, which can be sort of aloof with strangers. Lobo greeted me with a quick doggy hug and was happy to take a couple breaks during our walk around the woodland preserve so I could pet him. When we were walking, he would sometimes look back to check in with me. He did nicely on the leash and mostly stayed just a step or two ahead of me.

Orphans of the Storm Dogs: Lobo 2

Lobo is a big puffball

Lobo is an attentive guy. When we were in the off-leash run, there was a fly flying around and Lobo watched it very closely. He also tried to catch it a couple times but couldn’t quite reach. Lobo is very handsome, with his reddish-brown patches and bright blue eyes. He doesn’t seem like the biggest fan of other dogs or cats so would probably prefer to be the only dog in his new home. Stop in soon to see if Lobo is the one for you!

Orphans of the Storm Dogs: Lobo 1

Lobo is a good-looking fella

Radie the one-year-old Staffordshire Bull Terrier mix is super sweet. He was more on the shy side when he first came to the shelter, but now he’s started to come out of his shell. Overall Radie walks nicely on the leash, but he does get an occasional burst of energy where he wants to run ahead a few feet. He also wants to say hi to other dogs, so he can pull a bit when dogs are nearby.

Orphans of the Storm Dogs: Radie 2

Radie will happily snuggle with you on the couch

Radie is affectionate. He joined me on the bench for a while and kept giving me doggy kisses. He’s very gentle about it. Radie kept scooting closer to me the longer we were sitting together and enjoyed getting a nice rub on the chest. Other volunteers agree that he’s a real sweetie. Be sure to say hi to Radie on your next visit to the shelter!

Orphans of the Storm Dogs: Radie 1

Radie enjoying the sunshine

Boone the four-year-old Hound mix likes to stay active. We quickly made our way to the off-leash run, where Boone had fun exploring behind and underneath the bushes. He also liked keeping an eye on what was happening on the other side of the fence. Boone has a cute tail that curls up and over his back, and a face that looks like he’s smiling.

Orphans of the Storm Dogs: Boone Hound 1

Boone’s happy face

Boone likes to play. He was happy to chase after tennis balls, but needs a little practice on bringing them back. Also, when it was time to head back in, he wanted to play tag for a bit before getting his leash put back on. Boone gets along with other dogs and is currently sharing his kennel with another Hound (see below), so he could go to a home with or without another dog. Stop in soon to meet Boone!

Orphans of the Storm Dogs: Boone Hound 2

Boone wondering what’s happening on the other side of the fence

Queenie the seven-year-old Treeing Walker Coonhound mix is a little shy at first, but soon shows off her sweet side. She spent the first few minutes exploring the off-leash run, but came trotting over to me after I knelt down on the ground. Queenie likes getting her chin scratched and stretches her neck out to make sure you get the right spot.

Orphans of the Storm Dogs: Queenie 2

Queenie says, “So are you going to pet me now?”

Queenie is pretty mellow. She wasn’t too interested when I threw a tennis ball, she didn’t bark, and she mostly just moseyed around or stood next to me. She’s easy to walk on a leash, too. Queenie gets along well with other dogs and is currently sharing her kennel (see above), so she could go to a home with or without a furry friend. Come to the shelter to meet sweet Queenie!

I also saw Bud, Chester and Te Amo, Clarinet, Cookie, LucyMack, Mongo, Nala, Sammy, Snowflake, and Tyson.

Orphans of the Storm® Dogs in the First Snow of the Season

We had the first snow of the season this past weekend, and plenty of the dogs at Orphans of the Storm® were excited to play in it. (Apologies for the blurry photos. Snow and camera lenses do not mix well!)

Juno the three-year-old Husky mix was my first choice before I even arrived at the shelter because I knew there was a Husky and I knew he would love the snow! As we made our way around the woodland preserve, it was easy to imagine Juno pulling a sled through the Alaskan wilderness. Juno kept looking back at me like, “Come on! Keep up!” There are few things more joyful than a Husky on the first day of snow.

Juno got some snow on his nose

Juno also enjoyed exploring the off-leash run. He didn’t hesitate to stick his nose in the snow and snuffle around. Juno would do best in a household that will keep him both physically and mentally active. When I saw him out with another volunteer last weekend, it seemed like he knew some basic commands like “sit” and would be ready to learn more. Stop in soon to meet Juno!

Indy the one-year-old Mountain Cur mix has lots of energy. She spent the first few minutes in the off-leash run racing the dog on the other side of the fence. She then went exploring through the bushes. But eventually she realized that I was there to give her lots of attention. Indy leaned her body against my side and tucked her head under my arm while I pet her.

Indy on the move

Indy was eager to go around the woodland preserve. As soon as we walked through the gate, Indy and I were off and running! I think it was a combination of being excited about the snow and also wanting to warm up. Indy is currently sharing her kennel with another dog, so she could go to a home with or without another furry friend. Come in soon to meet Indy!

Dodson’s Dude the three-year-old Mountain Cur mix can be a little on the shy side at first, but the longer you’re with him, the more he warms up. Dodson’s Dude is more of a methodical sniffer: he doesn’t usually move too fast, and he makes sure he smells everything. He spent a lot of his time in the off-leash run exploring underneath the bushes.

Orphans of the Storm Dogs: Dodson's Dude 1

Dodson’s Dude didn’t realize the snow would be so deep!

Dodson’s Dude would come check in with me every so often to get a nice scratch on the back. He watched when I threw a tennis ball, but hasn’t quite grasped the idea of “fetch” yet. Dodson’s Dude doesn’t seem overly fond of other dogs, but I could divert his attention back to me. He walked nicely on the leash without much pulling. Stop by soon to see if Dodson’s Dude is the dude for you!

Noah the two-year-old Hound mix can be a little bark-y inside his kennel, but don’t let that deter you! He just wants to grab your attention. He didn’t bark once when we were together outside. Noah is a good walking companion and would often look up at me to check in and make sure we were on the same page. He would sniff around occasionally, but mostly just trotted next to me.

Orphans of the Storm Dogs: Noah 1

Noah is a handsome boy

Noah loves getting attention. He’ll stay by your side as long as you’re petting him and will happily give you some doggy kisses in return. He seemed to get a little cold while we were out, so maybe his new owners can get him a cute doggy sweater! Noah would do best as the only pet in an adult-only home. If that description fits your home, come in soon to say hello to Noah!

I also saw Astrid, Bella, BlushDiamond, Hank, Roxy, Wombat, and Zoey.

Orphans of the Storm® Dogs Would Be Thankful to Go Home with You

There are lots of young dogs at Orphans of the Storm® now who are ready to join a family this holiday season, and look forward to enjoying many more holidays for years to come. They (and the rest of the dogs and cats at the shelter) would be so thankful for you to come in and give them a chance to show you what you’ve been missing!

Boomer the two-year-old Border Collie mix is a real cutie. He’s smaller than your usual Border Collie but has plenty of energy to make up for his size. Boomer was eager to lead the way around the woodland preserve. He walks at a pretty quick pace, but doesn’t pull much. He also likes to stop and sniff.

Orphans of the Storm Dogs: Boomer BC 1

Boomer’s cute nosie

Boomer is an affectionate guy too. Whenever I knelt down to his level, he would come scampering over, put his front paws in my lap, and give me a few doggy kisses. As long as you’re petting him, Boomer is happy to stay still right by your side. Stop in soon to see if Boomer is the pooch for you!

Jasmine the one-year-old Beagle mix will immediately grab your attention because she has such striking markings on her face. She also does the cutest head-tilt, like she’s saying, “Who, me?” Jasmine is larger than your usual Beagle mix, but she’ll still try to convince you that she’s a lapdog.

Orphans of the Storm Dogs: Jasmine Beagle 2

Jasmine has a cute wrinkly forehead

Jasmine is still young, so she can be easily distracted, like any puppy. She wants to sniff everything and go in every direction and see what everyone else is up to. But when we were just walking one-on-one around the woodland preserve, she was happy to take a break every once in a while to get a good scratch on her back. Be sure to say hello to Jasmine on your next visit to the shelter!

Bristol the one-year-old Shepherd/Husky mix jumps up and down in excitement when he’s inside his kennel, but don’t let that deter you. After his initial burst of excitement, Bristol settles down nicely and can be a great walking companion. He just doesn’t like being cooped up a lot (understandably), so he would prefer to be an active home.

Orphans of the Storm Dogs: Bristol 1

Bristol knows he’s handsome

Bristol and I first went to the off-leash run, where he had a good time sniffing and exploring. He would come back to me every once in a while for a pat on the back or scratch under the chin. Then we took a walk around the woodland preserve, where Bristol did a good job of staying by my side or just a couple steps ahead of me. He’s a handsome and smart boy who is eager to find a family to call his own. Stop in soon to meet Bristol!

Rosie the one-year-old Mountain Cur mix is a real bundle of energy. Rosie’s motto seems to be, “Why walk when you can run?” If I had better endurance, we would have ran the entire way around the woodland preserve. (Instead, we only ran about a third.) I saw Rosie out with two potential adopters later in the afternoon, and she was running them all the way around the trail too.

Orphans of the Storm Dogs: Rosie 1

Rosie has a cute face

Rosie was a little calmer when we were inside the off-leash run. She did a few sprints along the fence, but otherwise she moved at a slower pace. She also joined me on the bench a few times and gave me some doggy kisses. She seemed to be okay around other dogs, though her exuberance might be too much for some. If you’re up for a pup with lots of pep, come in soon to meet Rosie!

Joui the one-year-old Rat Terrier mix is a snuggly little guy. The moment I knelt down next to him, he hopped right into my lap and gave me doggy kisses. He didn’t even notice that there were two big dogs right next to us! Joui was also fine with being picked up and held, though he would prefer to use his own four legs to get around.

Orphans of the Storm Dogs: Joui 1

Joui has adorably oversized ears

Joui is also adventurous. He followed his nose under the bench and crawled all the way through. He also dug around in the wood chips a bit to try to unearth whatever scent he had been following. When I gave Joui a treat, he didn’t eat it right away–instead, he carried it in his mouth and walked so proudly, with his head and his tail up high. Joui was previously sharing his kennel with another small dog, so he could go to a home with or without another dog. Come in soon to see if Joui is the one for you!

Lucy the one-year-old Labrador Retriever/Mountain Cur mix looks like she hasn’t necessarily gotten the best start in life, but she’s ready to begin a new chapter in a loving home with a loving family. Lucy can sometimes be a velcro dog and was either walking between my legs or so close to one side that we were touching. At other times, she’s happy to lead the way! She can even take a few steps just on her hind legs.

Orphans of the Storm Dogs: Lucy LBMC 2

Lucy says, “What’s going on over there?”

Lucy just wants people to like her. She’d occasionally stop and look up at me like, “Am I doing a good job?” And of course she was! Whenever I knelt down next to her, she’d put her nose right up to mine, give me a few sniffs, and then kiss my nose. Lucy particularly enjoys a good scratch on the neck. She can get a little excited around other dogs, but for the most part walked nicely on the leash. Make sure you say hi to Lucy!

I also saw AleckBella, Diamond, FestusJohn Boy, Lucy, the other Lucy, PikeScotty, Weezie, and Zoey.

Orphans of the Storm® Dogs Are Ready for Fall

If you like taking autumn strolls to enjoy the changing leaf colors, think about adding a new walking buddy to your home! The dogs at Orphans of the Storm® are ready and waiting.

Maggie the ten-year-old Border Collie mix is a sweet senior. She was eager to come out for a walk and greeted me with a wagging tail. We headed straight for the woodland trail, where Maggie showed off what a good walking companion she is. She walks at a nice pace and doesn’t pull. She found a small bush with lots of stems and had a great time using it as a back-scratcher.

Maggie enjoys her walks

Maggie occasionally does a cute half walk/half run, which ends up looking more like a bunny hop. When we passed other dogs on our walk, Maggie seemed politely interested and gave one of them a quick sniff hello. Maggie likes attention and will gladly stay by your side while you pet her. If you’re looking for an older dog who still has plenty of pep in her step, come in soon to meet Maggie!

Jayda the five-year-old Boxer/Staffordshire Bull Terrier mix is a well-behaved girl. She was the best leash-walker I met this week; I don’t think she pulled even once. Jayda is friendly and likes to snuggle. Although she didn’t give me any doggy kisses at this early stage in our relationship, she did put her nose up to my face a couple times, and I could see her being very affectionate once she gets to know a person better.

Orphans of the Storm Dogs: Jayda 1

Jayda knows that the best place to relax is at the foot of a person’s seat. When we got about 3/4 of the way around the woodland trail, Jayda spotted a bench and immediately went over and lay down next to it. She was happy to get a side rub and scratch behind the ears while we relaxed. Since it was perhaps the last warm day we’ll be having for a while, Jayda got a quick rinse with the hose at the end of our walk and very nicely stood still for it. Stop by soon to say hello to Jayda!

Yuri the three-year-old Husky mix is a very handsome boy with a playful nature. He was excited to come outside and quickly led the way to the off-leash run. He followed his nose around for a while, but then went back to the gate and looked at me like, “Are we going for a walk now?” So we did!

Orphans of the Storm Dogs: Yuri 1

Yuri knows he’s handsome

Yuri, being a Husky, could potentially be a good running buddy. I started to jog with him around the woodland trail, but we both determined it was too hot for that. Yuri gave me a quick doggy hug before we continued on our way. Yuri would do best as the only dog in an adult home. If that description fits you, come in soon to meet Yuri!

McGregor the one-year-old Labrador Retriever/Staffordshire Bull Terrier mix was described as “awesome” by one of the other volunteers before I took him out. And he is indeed a good boy! McGregor can be a little bark-y inside his kennel to get your attention, but he was quiet and calm while we were out. McGregor is one of those dogs who truly smiles, and it is so cute.

McGregor seems like a pretty easy-going guy. He walks nicely on the leash, gives doggy kisses, and gets along with other dogs. He previously shared his kennel, so he could go to a home with or without another dog. He was happy to stay by my side, both while we were walking and when we were taking a break on the bench. Be sure to say hi to McGregor on your next visit to the shelter!

I also saw Bella, Candice, Coal, Courage, Daffodile, Ginger, O’Shea, Snuffles, Weezie, and Zoey.

Orphans of the Storm® Dogs Get in the Holiday Spirit

On this visit to Orphans of the Storm®, volunteers were there to help decorate the grounds for the holiday season. Lights were strung on the trees, ornaments were hung along the walkway to the front office, and cheer was in the air! The festive spirit was contagious, and all the dogs I spent time with were happy to be out and about, watching the decorating.

(I apologize in advance for my pictures not being the best this week. Rest assured that they are all more precious in person. These pooches were extra wiggly and did not want to smile for the camera!)

Mollie the Labrador Retriever/Pit Bull Terrier puppy is less than a year old, and she is absolutely adorable. She’s currently Andy‘s kennelmate, and all she wanted to do was play with him. She would pounce on him, playfully put one of her paws on his head, and chase after him. Andy was very good-natured about it. Mollie is just being a cute puppy.

Mollie Pit Bull Labrador Retriever 1

Mollie sniffing along the ground

Mollie loves getting attention from people, too. Whenever I started to scratch her back, she would lean all her weight against me and wiggle with happiness. Right before we started to walk back to her kennel, she rolled over onto her back and wagged her tail while I gave her a belly rub. She looks especially cute when she abruptly sits down (I told her “Good sit!” each time she did that–maybe it will stick for her future training!). If you’re looking to add a lovable puppy to your home, come meet Mollie!

Petunia is a beautiful four-year-old Siberian Husky mix. A lot of Huskies (like Akiva) are silver, and some (like Forest) are black, but Petunia is a unique brown color. To add to her look, she has striking blue eyes that everyone immediately falls in love with. When I took her for a walk, all of the decorating volunteers stopped what they were doing and showered her with attention because she’s just too pretty to ignore.

Petunia ready to run

Petunia would do best in an active home, perhaps with a family who has experience with Huskies or other working breeds. Petunia loves to run, run, run, as she was bred to do, and doesn’t want to be bored. Petunia would love to be your running partner, and would be sure to keep you motivated. Stop by the shelter to meet Petunia–you can’t miss her!

Black Jack the four-year-old Black Labrador Retriever mix is a sweet guy. He’s much smaller than the average Lab, but has the same happy-go-lucky personality and energy as any other Lab out there. He was so excited to go for a walk that he slipped right past Craig (but I caught him–good teamwork!).

Black Jack Black Labrador Retriever 1

Black Jack exploring (and moving quickly)

I took Black Jack (and his kennelmate Jane, below) to one of the runs, and Black Jack was romping and sniffing everywhere. He’s also a playful guy, and tried to get Jane to play with him a couple times. He’d go into a playbow, pop back up, run a few feet away, and then turn around as if to ask, “Why aren’t you coming with?” This happy dog is looking for a happy home. Is it with you?

Black Jack loves to investigate everything

Jane the two-year-old Black Labrador Retriever (not to be confused with Jane the Hound) is Black Jack’s current kennelmate, and she is a real sweetheart. All she wants is a family to give her love and attention. She was a little calmer than Black Jack, but was still excited to explore the run when we first got there.

Jane Black Labrador Retriever 1

Jane coming over for a pat

After she finished exploring, Jane came and stood by me so I could pet her. The first couple times I tried to get a picture of her, she stuck her nose right in front of the camera–that would’ve been a little too much of a close-up! As I walked around the run, she would follow. She chose to stay by me rather than play with Black Jack, so you know that she will be a loyal pet.

Jane Black Labrador Retriever 2

Max the three-year-old Shepherd mix is one of the more handsome dogs at the shelter, in my opinion. He has soft, floppy ears and always looks like he has a doggy grin on his face. One of the volunteers asked me to profile Max especially, because she thinks he’s such a great dog. He sure is!

Max Shepherd 1

Max wondering what’s hiding under the hay

Max was pretty good at walking on the leash, but was ready to investigate as soon as we got to the run. With all that fluffy fur, he will be a great dog to cuddle with. Since he’s a Shepherd mix, he’s a smart dog and will be happy to learn any new tricks you might want to teach him. Max is waiting for you at the shelter, tail wagging!

Max Shepherd 2

Max was also willing to pose for the camera

On this visit to Orphans of the Storm®, I also got to spend time with a few dogs I’ve previously written about. One of those dogs is extra-special: Peggy! Peggy is a four-year-old Pit Bull Terrier mix and one of the dogs who benefited from The Tyler Fund. Peggy went off to training at Tops Kennels and graduated as a star student. The hope was that she would get adopted straight from Tops without having to return to the shelter, but unfortunately, here she is. She is a strong girl, but she is very willing to please and will only need a quick refresher to remind her of all the good manners and tricks she learned during her training. (She sat very nicely for me.) Peggy is also a giant lovebug. Every time I stop by her kennel, she licks my hands and then presses her side against the door so I can give her a nice scratch. Who doesn’t want a lovable, fully-trained dog to call their own? Peggy is hoping that Santa will bring her a family!

Peggy Pit Bull Terrier new

This photo of Peggy is so nice because it was taken by Orphans’ actual photographer.

I also said hello to Quiz the Terrier and Hershey the Chihuahua, who were out for some exercise with another volunteer. These two are some of my favorites. They are so sweet! I can’t even begin to understand why they’re still at the shelter. Smaller dogs are wonderful dogs, and these two are especially wonderful!
