Orphans of the Storm® Dogs with Whom You Can “Fall” in Love

The cooler fall weather means it’s time to bring a new, cuddly companion into your home! Make an appointment to visit Orphans of the Storm® soon and meet the cute and affectionate dogs available for adoption.

Smiley the three-year-old Pit Bull Terrier is a lovable low-rider. He often looks very serious, but when he does give a doggy smile, you can see why he got his name! You can’t help but smile back. Smiley is a very easy walking companion, in that he moves slowly in order to thoroughly sniff everything and generally doesn’t want to walk too far. He prefers roaming around the yard at his own pace.

Smiley has the cutest body shape, with his short legs and giant face

Smiley greets new people politely and especially enjoys getting his hips scratched. He wriggles around happily when you scratch the right spot. Smiley regularly attends play group and does well with other dogs, though not always with larger males like himself. He can actively play with the more rambunctious dogs, but gets along with calmer dogs too, so Smiley could go to a home with or without another dog. If you’re looking for a new companion to make you smile every day, come in soon to meet Smiley!

Smiley wasn’t feeling so smiley during our photoshoot

Gumball the two-year-old Pit Bull Terrier mix is a big, active boy. He gets the zoomies when he’s first let off-leash in the yard and happily runs a few laps before settling down to a slower walk and sniffing around to explore. Gumball loves toys and likes to have a variety of toy options to choose from. He alternates between chasing after them when you throw them and carrying them in his mouth while he walks around.

Gumball has a great smile

Gumball can be very strong when he wants to be, so a front-clip harness would probably be your friend if you’re the one to bring him home. He walks nicely on the leash once he gets his initial energy out, though. Gumball was content to take breaks as we made our way around the trail so I could pet him, and he particularly enjoys getting his sides scratched. If you’re looking for an active playmate, be sure to say hello to Gumball on your next visit to the shelter!

Gumball following his nose

Noelle the nine-year-old Husky mix is a volunteer favorite because she is so mellow, sweet, and easy-going. She’s probably the easiest dog to walk at the shelter right now, and she loves going for walks–when she finishes her first loop of the trail, she often starts heading in the direction of a second loop instead of heading back to her kennel. Noelle also enjoys spending time off-leash in the yard and meanders at her own pace, but comes back to whichever person is with her to get some chin scratches.

Noelle is a happy girl

Noelle does great with other dogs and attends play group every day. When she wants to play with a certain dog, she pokes them with her front paw. Noelle could go to a home with or without another dog. She could also go to a home with older children who understand she’s a senior and won’t jump all over her or be too loud around her. Noelle has been getting treated for a couple medical issues, but is now healthy enough to go to her forever home. She’s just looking for an understanding and accommodating home. If you’ve been thinking about adopting a senior, come in soon to meet Noelle!

Noelle is getting her fluff back for winter

Otter the three-year-old Hound mix is very sweet and affectionate. When you scratch his back and hips, he turns his head around to lick your hands. He’s also a leaner and will lean against your legs as long as you’re petting him. Otter likes to jump up a lot as if he were going to give a doggy hug, but he doesn’t actually make contact. It’s more like (hop) “Hi!” (hop) “Here I am!” (hop) “Got anything for me?” Then he stops hopping when you pet him or give him a toy.

Otter is very attentive to his person

Speaking of toys, Otter loves them. He is excellent at playing fetch. Otter runs after the toy, picks it up, brings it back, chews it for a few seconds, drops it at your feet, and patiently waits for you to throw it again. Otter is also a good walking buddy. He walks at a brisk pace but doesn’t pull on the leash. He isn’t a fan of other dogs, though, so he will pull a bit if he sees another dog coming. Otter would probably do best as the only dog in his new home. If you’re looking for a dog who is equal parts active and snuggly, stop by the shelter soon to meet Otter!

Otter was ready for his close-up

Bjork the six-year-old Pit Bull Terrier mix is a sweetheart. She gave me a doggy hug as soon as she came out of her kennel and was much more interested in snuggling than walking. She joined me on the bench whenever I sat down and, since the majority of my face was covered from my mask and my hat, Bjork decided to cover my neck in doggy kisses instead. She also loves belly rubs and will not-very-gracefully flop onto her back to request one.

Bjork likes toys and belly rubs simultaneously

Bjork can keep herself entertained with toys. She especially likes stuffed squeaky toys, and will either play fetch with you or with herself. Bjork walks great on the leash 99% of the time, but she will dart after squirrels and chipmunks so you want to make sure you’re holding onto her leash properly. Bjork can play with other rambunctious dogs in play group, but can be too much for calmer dogs. She could go to a family home with children over 10. If that sounds like you, be sure to say hello to Bjork on your next visit to the shelter!

Bjork has the cutest perky ears

Tesoro the four-year-old Pit Bull Terrier mix is a sweet boy with a gentle expression. He picked up the first toy he saw and carried it with him as we made our way to the off-leash yard. He likes to sniff at toys and carry them around, but wasn’t too interested in playing fetch during this outing. Tesoro came over to me to get some pets and stood politely at my side. He also put his front paws on the bench next to me when I sat down and enjoyed getting chin and chest scratches.

Tesoro has such a sweet face

Tesoro walks at a slow, easy pace the majority of the time and likes to take his time sniffing along the ground, but he can be strong and pull when there’s a particular direction he wants to go. He enjoys roaming around the yard and following his nose. Tesoro prefers to be with calmer, mellower dogs in play group. Since he’s a big boy, Tesoro would do best in a home with children over 10. Stop by the shelter soon to see if Tesoro is the one for you!

Tesoro likes to stop and smell all the plants

Crash the seven-year-old Cardigan Welsh Corgi/Chihuahua mix is super cute and cuddly. She joined me on the bench as soon as I sat down and just wanted to be pet. When I stopped petting her, she poked my hand with her front paw a couple times to let me know I should continue. Crash didn’t get off the bench until I stood up, so we probably could have sat there together all afternoon.

Crash sticking out her tongue

Crash is a perfect leash-walking companion. She stayed right by my side the entire way around the trail and went at whichever pace I did. When passing other dogs, she usually ignores them if they ignore her but will pull and bark if the other dog is also pulling and barking. Crash would prefer to be the only dog in her new home. Even though she’s small, she has more than enough to offer her new family. Be sure to say hello to Crash on your next visit to the shelter!

Crash exploring the yard

Travis the five-year-old Pit Bull Terrier mix is a big snuggler. He loves to get his back and hips scratched and turns his head around to lick your hands while you do so. He likes to give doggy hugs and will also sit at your feet while you scratch his chin and neck, with his tail wagging the entire time. With a little encouragement, Travis hopped up onto the bench next to me and poked my mask with his nose.

Travis has the best forehead wrinkles

Travis likes having different toy options, but he mostly pokes at them with his front paw and his nose and only chews on them a little bit. He walks nicely on the leash for the most part, though he will pull towards squirrels and chipmunks if they run across his path. Travis plays well with other dogs in play group, so he has the potential to go to a home with another dog. Come in soon to see if Travis is the pooch for you!

Orphans of the Storm® Dogs Who Make Friends Easily

Thanks to play groups, we have a much better understanding of which dogs at Orphans of the Storm® get along with other dogs and which don’t. Right now, there are so many adoptable dogs who enjoy the company of other dogs. If you already have a pet at home and are looking to add another, here are just a few to consider–and there are plenty of others!

Bradshaw the seven-year-old Labrador Retriever mix is super sweet. He just wants to be loved, and has the most contented expression on his face whenever he gets pet. He particularly enjoys getting his sides and hips scratched, but anywhere really works for him! Bradshaw enjoys taking his time to explore around the yard, sniffing here and there before coming back to you to get more snuggles.

Bradshaw keeping an eye on things

Bradshaw is a very easy walking companion. He goes at a slow and steady pace and, since he’s older, he doesn’t need long walks. Bradshaw attends play group almost every day and enjoys the company of calm, mellow dogs like himself. This means he could go to a home with or without another dog. If you’ve been considering adding a sweet senior to your home, be sure to say hello to Bradshaw on your next visit to the shelter!

Bradshaw smiling while getting pet

Murdoch the one-year-old Border Collie mix is very easy-going. He’s a great walking companion who doesn’t pull at all on the leash and just stays one or two steps ahead of you. He occasionally stops to sniff around, but mostly trots along evenly. When Murdoch was in the off-leash yard, he poked a few toys with his nose but wasn’t too interested in chasing after them or playing fetch.

Murdoch showing off his blue eye and floofy tail

Murdoch started off by slowly exploring the yard, then got the zoomies and ran a couple laps with a happy doggy smile on his face. He’s a handsome, fluffy boy with one bright blue eye and he’ll definitely catch your attention as you walk through the kennels. Murdoch attends play group and likes being with other dogs, though other large males don’t always like him back. He could go to a home with or without another dog. If you’re looking for a go-with-the-flow kind of dog, come in soon to meet Murdoch!

Murdoch enjoying the trail

Roger the three-year-old Doberman Pinscher/Shepherd mix is a big, strong boy with a big heart to match. He is an excellent snuggling companion. Every time I sat down on a bench, Roger immediately stopped whatever he was doing and came over to lean against my legs and give me doggy kisses. He especially enjoys scratches on his sides, hips, and neck and will stand by you for as long as you keep petting him. Whenever we passed someone new on our walk, Roger gave them an enthused doggy hug and wanted to snuggle with them too.

Roger being a snuggle-bug

Roger likes to lead the way on walks and would probably do best with a front-clip harness to deter him from pulling. He did slow down the longer we were out on the trail, though. Roger regularly attends play group and gets along with both the calm, gentle dogs and the dogs who like to chase and play tag. He could go to a home with or without another dog. Visit the shelter soon to meet Roger!

Roger is so cute with his one floppy ear

I also spent some time with Eerie, Gazoo, and Oswald, but all three of them are shy little Chihuahuas who just wanted to be carried and cuddled rather than walk on their own, so I wasn’t able to get pictures–my hands were literally full!

Orphans of the Storm® Dogs Handle the Heat

It was a hot and humid day, but the dogs at Orphans of the Storm® were still happy to spend time outside!

Ajax the one-year-old Hound mix is so handsome. He caught my eye right away when I got to the shelter, so I knew I wanted to take him out first. Ajax would love to have a yard of his own. He enjoyed exploring around the Enrichment Park, calmly sniffing and exploring all the corners. He got one case of the zoomies and ran a quick lap, but settled down again quickly. When I sat down on the bench, Ajax came over to me to get some pets.

Orphans of the Storm Dogs: Ajax 1

Ajax enjoying the green plants

Ajax likes to lead the way on walks. He’s a big, strong boy and can sometimes pull on the leash when he wants to go at a faster pace or go in a certain direction. Ajax is also a smart boy, and knew to climb underneath a bush to cool off in the shade. Ajax occasionally attends play group and gets along with other active dogs who like to play, so he could go to a home with or without another dog. Say hello to Ajax on your next visit to the shelter!

Orphans of the Storm Dogs: Ajax 2

Ajax considering a dip in the puppy pool

Gunter the seven-month-old Pit Bull Terrier mix is still very much a puppy. He loves to give enthusiastic doggy kisses that sometimes turn into excited nibbles. Gunter jumps up and down to give doggy hugs when he first comes out of his kennel, but the heat on this particular day mellowed him out pretty quickly. He’ll happily climb into your lap whenever the opportunity presents itself, but he’s still very wiggly!

Orphans of the Storm Dogs: Gunter 1

Gunter licking his hips after a quick drink

Gunter walked nicely on the leash around the woodland preserve trail. There were a couple instances where he started to chew on the leash, but he dropped it after a few seconds and continued walking at a nice pace. Even though Gunter is still a pretty small puppy, he can hold his own in play group with bigger dogs and loves to chase and be chased. He could go to a home with or without another dog. If you’re looking for a happy, sweet puppy, come in soon to meet Gunter!

Orphans of the Storm Dogs: Gunter 2

Gunter wasn’t too sure about the agility equipment

Bailey the eighteen-year-old Chihuahua mix is a super senior! But don’t let his age fool you–Bailey likes to lead the way on walks and still has lots of pep in his step. I thought he would only want to be outside for a few minutes in this heat, but he loved exploring around the yard and even nimbly jumped over a puddle more than once. When I told him it was time to go back inside, he just looked at me as if to say, “But I’m not done yet!” and wanted to go in the opposite direction of the kennels.

Orphans of the Storm Dogs: Bailey Chihuahua 1

Bailey is too cute for words

Bailey can be a little timid when you first meet him, but he enjoys getting scratched under his chin (and he has a cute little underbite) and eventually warms up to getting his sides scratched. Bailey politely sniffed another small dog while we were on our walk and has the potential to go to a home with another dog. If you’ve been considering opening your home to a senior, be sure to meet Bailey on your next visit to the shelter!

Orphans of the Storm Dogs: Bailey Chihuahua 2

Bailey trotting around the yard

Drip the one-year-old Pit Bull Terrier mix has lots of affection to give. He will happily sit down next to you and lean against you while you pet him, and won’t move again until you stop. Drip particularly likes getting his sides rubbed, and may start to roll over onto your lap so you can rub his belly too. He also didn’t let a face mask stop him from giving me plenty of doggy kisses! Drip is potentially housebroken, or close to it, because he went potty as soon as all four of his paws were outside his kennel.

Orphans of the Storm Dogs: Drip 1

Drip deciding between two toys

Drip loves toys, especially stuffed squeaky toys. He ran around the Enrichment Park carrying one in his mouth, then plopped down on the ground to chew it a bit. He also brought one toy over to me and held it while I pet him. Drip pulls on the leash when using a regular collar, but is much easier to walk when using a front-clip harness. He likes to lead the way and walk at a quick pace regardless. Drip gets along with other dogs but is a “rough and rowdy” player, so he does best with other active dogs who won’t get annoyed by him. He has the potential to go to a home with another playful dog. If Drip sounds like the kind of dog for you, come in soon to meet him!

Orphans of the Storm® is still operating by appointment only, so please call 847-945-0235 to schedule an appointment to meet these dogs or any others.

Orphans of the Storm® Dogs Who Found Their Forever Homes, Part XXIV

Another happy success story! Nico was adopted by Orphans of the Storm®’s Canine Enrichment & Playgroup Coordinator, Carrie. His first “gotcha” day is coming up next week! Here is how Carrie and Nico came together.

I met Nico nearly 3 years ago, when I was a volunteer at Orphans of the Storm®. I had always been a “big dog person” and barely glanced at the littles. Nico came on my radar when he started having behavior problems, biting to be specific. There were about 2 staff members that could handle him, and no volunteers. I always stopped by his kennel to give him treats; he would growl, snarl, snap at me, but I still loved him. I felt so bad that he didn’t get walks with volunteers. I started spending time with Nico and getting to know him. I learned that he was an affectionate dog, under all his layers. He wanted to be with his people, but was very defensive of being touched. We would go on walks, I would toss treats on the ground for him, he started slowly trusting me more. He would jump up with his front paws on my lap, wagging, saying, “I love you! You can feed me treats, take me on walks, talk to me…but DO NOT TOUCH ME!” I did not attempt to pet Nico until after I had been working with him for 9 months. I was sitting with him and he came over and I just knew it was the time. He let me pet him, and it was a very happy moment for me.

Orphans of the Storm Success Story: Nico 5

Nico and I continued to bond over the 2 years he was at the shelter. He would still snap/bite at me when he felt threatened. We knew Nico could not be adopted out to the public; it was too risky for his and the public’s safety. He would spend the rest of his life as a “shelter mascot.”

Orphans of the Storm Success Story: Nico 1

After 2 years of time with Nico at the shelter, I decided to bring him into my home as a foster. I had no idea what he would be like at home. I fostered him for 6 weeks; we built a solid routine and a great relationship with my other dog, Koopa. Koopa and Nico got along right away.

Orphans of the Storm Success Story: Nico 2

On May 4, 2019, I decided to officially adopt Nico. I promised him I would be his mom, even with the behavior problems, and that I would do everything I can to help him live a happy, healthy life.

Orphans of the Storm Success Story: Nico 4

Fast forward a year: Nico is thriving. He loves his sister dog, Koopa, and loves his home. He has helped me foster countless dogs. Although he likes to “protest” when a new dog comes, once he lets his walls down–he’s a great foster brother. Nico still has behavior problems that he will always have, and things that I cannot change–only manage. I made a commitment to him, and to be totally honest–we do have challenging moments. But I wouldn’t trade Nico for the world. He has taught me SO much patience, and a new love and appreciation for small dogs. I no longer consider myself a “big dog person.” I am an “all dog person,” with an extra soft spot for the “angry Chihuahuas.” I am forever grateful for Orphans of the Storm® for bringing Nico to me, and visa versa. I can’t wait to see what the future has in store for us.

Orphans of the Storm Success Story: Nico 1

Thank you, Carrie, for sharing your story about Nico!

Orphans of the Storm® Dogs Who Get Along with Other Dogs

If you already have a dog (or multiple dogs) at home with you and are looking to add another, there are so many dog-friendly dogs at Orphans of the Storm® right now! Below are just some of the ones you should meet.

Princess the one-year-old Boxer/Pit Bull Terrier mix is super snuggly. Any time you kneel down to her level, she will immediately scoot her way into your lap to get pets. She wanted to be so close to me when we were sitting together on a bench that she first put her paws on my shoulder, and then on top of my head! You can’t get much closer than that. Princess also likes to give gentle doggy kisses. She is a very easy walking companion.

Orphans of the Storm Dogs: Princess Boxer PBT 1

Princess coming in for a cuddle

Princess is a play group regular and participates every day. Even the dogs who are pickier about their friends all want to be friends with Princess. Princess is housebroken and crate-trained. She has been around children as young as four and did well with them, so she’s ready to join a family. Be sure to say hello to Princess on your next visit to the shelter!

Orphans of the Storm Dogs: Princess Boxer PBT 2

Princess has one cute tan ear

Badger the five-year-old Pit Bull Terrier mix is the kind of dog who would rather cuddle on the couch than go on walks. In fact, the only way I got him to walk at all was to go as far as the leash would let me, kneel down, and have Badger come over for pets; then repeat; then repeat again. Badger loves to bury his face in your lap while you scratch his ears and sides. Badger eventually did some exploring in the off-leash run but came back to me often to get more attention.

Orphans of the Storm Dogs: Badger 1

Badger sticking his tongue out at the idea of walking

Badger is getting more comfortable in play group and is becoming a regular participant. He enjoys playing with the other dogs. He has some resource-guarding tendencies when it comes to food, so an adult-only home would probably be best for him. If you’re looking for a new cuddle companion, come in soon to meet Badger!

Orphans of the Storm Dogs: Badger 2

Badger likes to keep an eye on things

Brunhilda the two-year-old Hound mix is very Hound-y! We always know where she is because she is a talker who loves to bay. Once Brunhilda gets on the woodland preserve trail, though, she quiets down and focuses on sniffing. She likes to walk at a quick pace bordering on running but keeps her nose to the ground almost the entire time. She would love to go home with an active person who will take her on long walks often.

Orphans of the Storm Dogs: Brunhilda 2

Brunhilda loves to use her nose

Brunhilda also enjoyed romping around the Enrichment Park. She poked at toys and watched me throw them, but wasn’t too interested in playing with any of them. Brunhilda participates in play group every day and loves being with the other dogs. She puts a smile on every volunteer’s face when we hear her coming. She’s a very sweet girl. Stop in soon to meet Brunhilda!

Orphans of the Storm Dogs: Brunhilda 1

Brunhilda, summed up in one photo

Rascal the six-year-old Pit Bull Terrier mix is a big, strong boy. He walks nicely on the leash for the most part, but if he decides he wants to go in a certain direction then that’s probably the direction you’re going to go in! He just doesn’t realize his own strength. Rascal enjoyed exploring all around the Enrichment Park. He sniffed at some toys but wasn’t interested in playing fetch on this particular outing.

Orphans of the Storm Dogs: Rascal 1

Rascal has the cutest wrinkly forehead

Rascal loves getting his hips scratched. His whole back half wriggles and he looks up at you with a happy doggy smile. He’s a friendly boy and seems pretty good at coming to you when you call for him. Rascal has participated in a couple play groups and likes romping with the other dogs. He could also go to a home with children. Come by the shelter soon to say hello to Rascal!

Orphans of the Storm Dogs: Rascal 2

Rascal unfortunately came out blurry in the rest of his photos because we got caught in some rain

Winston the two-year-old Border Collie/Australian Shepherd mix is looking for a special, understanding home. Winston has epilepsy and will probably need to be on medication for the rest of his life to prevent seizures. But he can absolutely still live a full and happy life! (My childhood dog was medicated for epilepsy and lived to be 11, with only a handful of seizures.) Winston is super smart. He already knows basic commands like “sit” and “shake” and could definitely learn more.

Orphans of the Storm Dogs: Winston 2

Winston is such a handsome, attentive boy

Winston loves playing with toys. He will happily chase after toys when you throw them, though he doesn’t always bring them back. Winston is a pretty good walking companion who only occasionally gets a burst of energy where he would rather run than walk. He’s an affectionate boy who likes to give doggy hugs. Winston gets along with other dogs and enjoys coming to play group. Come in soon to learn more about Winston!

Orphans of the Storm Dogs: Winston 1

Winston always has a knowing look

Chopper the one-year-old Labrador Retriever/Staffordshire Bull Terrier mix was adopted as a little puppy but recently returned for reasons unrelated to him. He’s not too happy about being back at the shelter and can be a little nervous when he first comes out of his kennel, but warms up quickly and likes getting pet. He’s an easy walking companion.

Orphans of the Storm Dogs: Chopper Lab SBT 1

Chopper doing some exploring

Chopper enjoyed exploring around the off-leash yard and would come over to me when I knelt down to his level. He got more playful the longer he was out. Chopper sometimes joins play group and starts off with his tail tucked between his legs, but comes out of his shell after a bit and has made some good doggy friends. Chopper already has almost a year of experience living in a home, so he’s ready to settle in with his new forever family. If you think that might be you, come in soon to meet Chopper!

Orphans of the Storm Dogs: Chopper Lab SBT 2

Chopper was much perkier by the end of our outing

Monty the three-year-old Chihuahua/Dachshund mix is a little bundle of energy. You haven’t seen zoomies until you’ve seen Monty sprinting around the Enrichment Park! It is too cute. Those little legs go much faster than you would expect. Even on our walk around the woodland preserve trail, Monty led the way and I almost had to jog to keep up with him.

Orphans of the Storm Dogs: Monty 2

Monty is too precious

Monty doesn’t mind being picked up and snuggled, but he would still prefer to walk on his own rather than be carried around. He especially enjoys playing with toys. Monty was sharing his kennel with another smaller dog who has since been adopted, and he has a big enough personality that he would probably get along with larger dogs too. Be sure to say hello to Monty on your next visit to the shelter!

Orphans of the Storm Dogs: Monty 1

Monty has the tiniest legs but biggest ears

I also saw Batman (Wombat), Carlos, Cocoa, Jupiter, Prince, and Turbo.

The first play group this week included Badger, Big Boy, Brunhilda, Carlos, Polly (who has just graduated from Level 2 of obedience training!), Prince, and Princess, as well as not-yet-profiled dogs Buck and Lola.

The second play group included Badger, Batman (Wombat), Brunhilda, Carlos, Chevy, Chopper, Jupiter, Pepper, Polly, Prince, Princess, Sirius, Titus, Turbo, and Winston, as well as not-yet-profiled dogs Bailey, Buck, Chestnut, Chili, Cornelius, Flower, Frosty, Garland, Hinkle, Keggy, Kylo, Lenny, Lola, Skippy, Spooky, Wednesday, and Yukon.

Orphans of the Storm® Dogs Say, “Sun’s Out, Tongues Out!”

It was a steamy day at Orphans of the Storm®, so the dogs were on their most mellow setting and just wanted to relax and stay cool. There will be some long tongues in the photos ahead!

Also, the Orphans of the Storm® website is under construction, so please bear with me as I work on updating all of the dogs’ links on the Dog Profiles page! Apologies in advance if you end up on a “page not found” page.

Luanne the three-year-old Australian Cattle Dog mix is super snuggly. As soon as I knelt down to her level, she put her front paws in my lap and covered my face in doggy kisses. She was happy to stay in my lap for as long as I was petting her. Luanne is a pretty good walking companion in that she mostly walks nicely by your side and doesn’t pull much, but she does like to nibble on the leash a bit. She seems to understand the “drop” command, though, so she just needs a little more practice.

Orphans of the Storm Dogs: Luanne 1

Luanne with her pretty speckled fur

Luanne loves being with other dogs. She goes to play group every day and sometimes stays in for an hour or more–she gets along with everybody! Luanne can also hold her own when play gets a little rowdy. Luanne is a fun girl looking for a fun home. If you think that might be with you, be sure to say hello to Luanne on your next visit to the shelter!

Orphans of the Storm Dogs: Luanne 2

Luanne has bright eyes and a pink tongue!

Ansley the four-year-old Plott mix greets every person with a wagging tail. She was eager to go for a walk and led the way to the off-leash run, where she had a fun time exploring behind the bushes and keeping cool in the shade. She came over for a pet when I knelt down to her level, and put her front paws in my lap.

Orphans of the Storm Dogs: Ansley 2

Ansley on alert

Ansley is currently sharing her kennel with Puddin (see below) and gets along with other dogs. She and Tiny sniffed each other through the fence and even both put their front feet up to hold paws before deciding to race each other. Ansley walked pretty nicely on the leash, though she’ll occasionally pull if there’s a particular scent she wants to follow. Come in soon to see if Ansley is the pooch for you!

Orphans of the Storm Dogs: Ansley 1

Ansley enjoying a romp

Puddin the seven-year-old Beagle mix is very shy right now and needs some extra encouragement to come out of her kennel. She doesn’t mind being picked up and seems to prefer being carried past the kennels of the other dogs before she feels more comfortable walking on her own. Puddin’s tail was tucked between her legs at first, but loosened up the longer we were out.

Orphans of the Storm Dogs: Puddin 2

Puddin feeling perkier

Puddin can’t hide the fact that she’s part Beagle! She loved walking through the tall grasses along the woodland preserve trail and stopped often for thorough sniffing. Puddin gets along with other dogs her size and is currently sharing her kennel with Ansley (see above). She just needs some extra TLC right now to help her come out of her shell. If you’re looking for a little sweetie, come in soon to meet Puddin!

Orphans of the Storm Dogs: Puddin 1

Puddin wanted to stay in the grass for as long as she could

Mabel the four-year-old Chihuahua/Terrier mix is the cutest little thing. As soon as she found a cool spot in the grass, she flopped over and rolled around on her back. When I started giving her a belly rub, Mabel closed her eyes and almost fell asleep! Everyone who saw her couldn’t help but smile, she looked so content.

Orphans of the Storm Dogs: Mabel 1

Mabel says, “Excuse me, I have a belly that requires rubbing!”

Mabel is also a good lapdog. She likes being carried and held. Mabel gets along with other dogs her size. She is currently sharing her kennel with a Beagle not up for adoption yet, and had a brief play group session with four other little dogs. It was too hot to actively play for her, but she politely sniffed everyone and didn’t mind them sniffing her too. Be sure to say hello to Mabel the next time you come to the shelter!

Orphans of the Storm Dogs: Mabel 2

Mabel in play group with new friends

I also spent some time with a few not-yet-profiled dogs but didn’t get their pictures yet: Khavi, Malachi, Nidget, and Carmella (who are all currently sharing a kennel and are all super snuggly lapdogs); Orlando (who is one of the most affectionate dogs at the shelter right now); and Thelma and Louise (a bonded pair of Puggles!).

Play group this week included Alec(k), Beatrix, Brutus, Cass, Cheyenne (Shyanne), Donny, Dunkin the Red, Elijah, Huckleberry, John Boy, Leia, Luanne, Lucy, Maggie, Max, Mojo, Polly, Quinn, Roscoe, Sasha, and Turbo, as well as not-yet-profiled dogs Al, Bruno, Chance, Dennis, Heath, the other Max, PB&J, Pixie, Posie, Ruben, Simone, Snickers, Val, and Wile-E.dd

Orphans of the Storm® Dogs Looking for a Cuddle Companion

There are lapdogs big and small at Orphans of the Storm® right now! If you’re looking for a particularly snuggly new friend, now is the time to come in and find him or her!

Polar Bear the seven-year-old Staffordshire Bull Terrier mix is a big lovebug who doesn’t realize just how big he is, because he will try to climb into your lap whenever he gets the chance. Polar Bear is super affectionate and covered my face in doggy kisses multiple times. He joined me on the bench and was happy to sit as close to me as possible. When we passed a couple other volunteers, Polar Bear politely sat by their feet and waited for them to give him pets.

Polar Bear is super smiley

Polar Bear is a very easy walking companion. Since he’s older and larger, he just pleasantly lumbers along at a slow pace and doesn’t pull on the leash at all. We only made it part of the way around the woodland preserve before Polar Bear decided he had walked long enough, so short walks around the neighborhood will probably be enough for him in his new home. Although Polar Bear loves people, he isn’t as much a fan of other dogs and would do best as the only dog in his new home. Come in soon to meet Polar Bear!

Kacy and Oliver the five-year-old Rat Terrier mixes are a bonded pair looking for their new home together. They can be a little wary of strangers, but once they feel comfortable with you, you will have two new best friends forever! Because of this wariness of strangers, they’re looking to go to a home that doesn’t get many visitors. These little pooches act as good guard dogs and will alert their new owner whenever someone is coming by the house.

Orphans of the Storm Dogs: Kacy Oliver 1

Kacy has giant ears and tiny toes

Oliver warmed up to me first. When we got to the Enrichment Park, Oliver hovered around my feet until I knelt down to pet him. He later joined me on the bench and enjoyed getting more attention. Oliver also let me pick him up and carry him around a bit, but he’s an active boy and prefers doing his own walking. He did some zooming around the park! Oliver also prefers to lead the way on walks and moves at a quick pace.

Oliver flys!

Kacy was also pretty eager to get pet and put her front paws in my lap when I got down to her level. Kacy enjoys taking her time exploring, and mostly watched as Oliver romped around. She was also fine with me picking her up and holding her, and sat in my lap for a bit. Kacy is a good walking companion and likes to stop and sniff often. She doesn’t pull on the leash at all.

Kacy being serious

Kacy and Oliver are smart dogs and quick learners. They participated in the Top Dog Competition back in October and mastered the agility course. They are very treat-motivated! Kacy and Oliver have shared their kennel with a variety of small dogs and also participate in small dog play groups, so they get along with other dogs around their size. If you’re looking for two loyal dogs to bring happiness to your home, be sure to say hello to Kacy and Oliver!

Kona the seven-year-old Chihuahua mix has a big personality in a teeny body. He has a couple favorite volunteers and when he sees them coming, his entire body wriggles in excitement and he starts squealing! It is super cute. Kona can take a little time to warm up to strangers, but once he knows you then he will ask to be picked up and held, and will give you lots and lots of doggy kisses.

Orphans of the Storm Dogs: Kona 2

Kona is a cutie

Kona gets along with dogs both large and small. He is currently sharing a kennel with Kacy and Oliver (see above) and has participated in both small dog play groups and medium/large dog play groups. You can see a video of Kona holding his own with the big dogs here. In terms of people, Kona prefers the company of adults rather than children (10 years or younger) and might do best in an adult home. Be sure to say hello to Kona on your next visit to the shelter!

I also walked Thunder for the first time in a long time! He had back surgery in December, but is now recovered and ready to find his forever home! You can see updates (with lots of cute photos and videos) of his recovery process here. Thunder was fostered by a couple different volunteers while he was recovering and was a sweet, snuggly, well-behaved house guest. Thunder is housebroken and crate trained, and loves to be with his person. He’s looking for a home where he can be the only pet.

The play group I attended this week included Alec(k), Bo, Brutus, Cheyenne (Shyanne), Clyde, Cocoa, Delilah, Elijah, Gia (Pippa), Huckleberry, John Boy, Lucy, Maggie, Quinn, Reggie, Sasha, Spike, Thea, Tom, Whizzer, and YoYo (Yeyo), as well as not-yet-profiled dogs Bandi, Polly, and Pumpkin. We reached a new milestone this week, of over 2,000 dogs in play groups!

Orphans of the Storm® Dogs Are Hoping to Start Their Summers in a Forever Home

Orphans of the Storm® will be closed Monday for Memorial Day, but open regular hours (11am-5pm) Saturday and Sunday. You still have time to welcome a new furry family member into your home before the holiday!

Molly the four-year-old Black and Tan Coonhound mix is the sweetest! All she wants to do is snuggle with the nearest person. Instead of exploring around the Enrichment Park, Molly spent her time giving me lots of doggy hugs and attempting to climb into my lap. When someone walks up to pet her, she wants to be as close as possible and will try to sit on their feet.

Orphans of the Storm Dogs: Molly Coonhound 1

Molly has the floppiest ears

Molly walks nicely on the leash and occasionally stops to sniff, but not as much as you might expect from a Hound. She’s currently sharing her kennel with a little Beagle, so she could go to a home with or without another dog. She also goes to play group, but gets a little overwhelmed in large, active groups and prefers just a quick sniff hello before moving on. If you’re looking for a great cuddle companion, be sure to say hello to Molly on your next visit to the shelter!

Molly always has the sweetest look on her face

Spike the ten-month-old Staffordshire Bull Terrier mix came from an owner who didn’t have enough time for him, but that means he already has experience living in a home and is ready to find his forever one. Spike is very calm for a puppy! Even though he could throw his weight around if he wanted to, he actually walks great on the leash. He’s more of a meanderer and likes to take his time sniffing.

Orphans of the Storm Dogs: Spike 2

Spike has a lovable giant square head

Spike has participated in a couple small play groups with well-socialized dogs who have been teaching him proper play group etiquette. Spike is a quick learner but may still be too exuberant for some dogs, and may do best as the only dog in his new home. Spike has quickly become a volunteer favorite because of his happy personality. Come in soon to meet Spike!

Orphans of the Storm Dogs: Spike 1

Spike is surprisingly floofy for his breed

Reggie the one-year-old Labrador Retriever mix has lots of energy! Reggie ran a few laps around the yard before slowing down to sniff and explore. He wasn’t overly interested in playing fetch, but poked some of the toys with his nose. Reggie politely sniffed Clyde when they were on opposite sides of the fence, as well as when we passed Clyde on leash during our walk around the woodland preserve.

Orphans of the Storm Dogs: Reggie Lab 1

Reggie says, “Whee!!”

Reggie likes to take breaks from romping around in order to get pet. He put his front paws in my lap on multiple occasions so I could scratch his neck and ears. Reggie likes to walk at a quick pace, but doesn’t pull on the leash too much. He has a great doggy smile and always looks happy. Stop by the shelter soon and say hello to Reggie!

Stevo the two-year-old Chihuahua/Jack Russell Terrier mix is a little shy and nervous right now. He wasn’t so sure about coming out for a walk, so I sat in his kennel with him for a couple minutes to give him time to get comfortable with me. Then we were on our way! Despite his hesitation, Stevo is great at walking on the leash. He was always either right by my side or just a couple steps ahead.

Orphans of the Storm Dogs: Stevo 1

Stevo is too cute for words

Stevo prefers having a chance to sniff a person before you start petting him (which is what you should do for all dogs anyway!) but will stand politely once you do pet him, and won’t start walking again until you stop. Stevo is looking for an understanding home with people who will help him come out of his shell. If that sounds like it could be you, come in soon to meet Stevo!

Orphans of the Storm Dogs: Stevo 2

Thea the two-year-old Staffordshire Bull Terrier mix is super affectionate. She loves to give doggy hugs and doggy kisses, and will try to climb into your lap whenever the opportunity presents itself. Thea was a little shy when she first arrived at the shelter, but she has made a lot of progress and now wags her tail at everyone and wants to say hello.

Orphans of the Storm Dogs: Thea 1

Thea sometimes rocks the “one ear up, one ear down” look

Thea walks pretty well on the leash, but can be a little reluctant sometimes and needs encouragement to keep going. Once she’s settled and comfortable in her new neighborhood, she’ll probably do just fine! Thea attends play groups and mostly kept to herself at first, but has recently started engaging with other dogs and is showing more of her playful side. Stop by the shelter soon to see if Thea is the pooch for you!

Orphans of the Storm Dogs: Thea 2

Thea will eventually learn to love walks!

Cocoa the three-year-old Labrador Retriever/Staffordshire Bull Terrier mix is very energetic and playful. She gets super excited when she realizes it’s her turn to come out for a walk and can pull on the leash a bit, but eventually settles down (though she still prefers to walk at a quick pace). Cocoa loves toys more than anything! Balls, squeakers, ropes–you name it, she’ll play with it! This means she’s also great at playing fetch.

Orphans of the Storm Dogs: Cocoa 1

Cocoa loved this ball the most

Cocoa is also cuddly and affectionate. She combines her love of people and toys by snuggling on her person’s lap while chewing her toy. Cocoa participates in play groups and has a rambunctious play style. She has also completed Level 1 of obedience training and has graduated to Level 2. If you’re looking for an active, playful dog who will also snuggle with you at the end of the day, be sure to say hello to Cocoa!

I also saw Alec(k), Barney, Big Boy, Brutus, Carlos, Cheyenne (Shyanne)Clyde, Dusty, and Gracie.

The play group I attended this week included Alec(k), Bo, Cocoa, Elijah, Gia (Pippa), Huckleberry, John Boy, Lucy, Maggie, Mojo, Molly, Sasha, Thea, Tom, and YoYo (Yeyo), as well as not-yet-profiled dogs Bandi, CoCoPolly, Pumpkin, Scooby, and Tucker.

Orphans of the Storm® Dogs Hoping 2019 Is Their Year to Find a Home

2018 was a happy year for the 1,075 dogs and 823 cats who were adopted and went to their furever homes! There are still plenty of dogs at Orphans of the Storm® who are waiting for their new families to find them, and some have been waiting longer than others. At the beginning of each year, I always like to make a special note of the long-timers who could use an extra boost in attention to help make this year the year they finally get to go home. The dogs listed below have been at Orphans of the Storm® for one year or longer. Please consider taking them out and spending some time with them on your next visit to the shelter!

  • Aleck (Alec) the 5-year-old Pointer mix

  • Hobbs the 7-year-old Mountain Cur mix
  • John Boy the 6-year-old Labrador Retriever mix (who was a Top Dog Competitor)
  • Lucy the 10-year-old Boxer mix

  • Thunder the 10-year-old Boxer mix
  • Vanilla the 4-year-old Staffordshire Bull Terrier mix
  • Whizzer the 7-year-old Hound mix (who has completed a training course and was our Top Dog Champion!)

And here are a few dogs who haven’t been at the shelter quite as long, but some good pooches I walked the weekend before Christmas:

  • Apollo the 3-year-old Staffordshire Bull Terrier mix
  • Jasmine the 8-year-old Rhodesian Ridgeback mix
  • Maggie Mae the 2-year-old Labrador Retriever mix
  • Princess the 7-year-old Labrador Retriever mix

Make 2019 the year you add a new furry family member!

Orphans of the Storm® Dogs Invite You to Clear the Shelters

Tomorrow, Saturday, August 18, is the annual Clear the Shelters nationwide event! Orphans of the Storm® is participating for the fourth year in a row. On this day, adoption fees for dogs and cats 5 months and older will be waived. This waived fee includes spay/neuter, but additional veterinary costs (such as final shots) will still apply if needed.

There are more than 100 dogs ready and waiting to join a new family this weekend. Here is a list of the longest long-timers, who have been at Orphans of the Storm® for 2 or more years, and who have their paws crossed that this year is their year!

And below are some newer dogs for you to meet, too!

Monte the one-year-old Vizsla mix found himself at the shelter because he was too nervous for his first family. He is still skittish, but has come a long way since he first arrived. He’s afraid of some things, like walking past the big dumpsters in the parking lot or having a branch of the bush he’s sniffing touch his back unexpectedly, but doesn’t seem fearful of people. Monte greeted me with a doggy hug as soon as he came out of his kennel, and gave me a few doggy kisses during our walk.

Orphans of the Storm Dogs: Monte 1

Monte is a handsome pup

Monte is an excellent walking companion. He only pulls on the leash if something spooks him. Otherwise, he’s super easy. Monte enjoys being pet and always came straight to me when I knelt down to his level. Monte gets along with children, so he could join a family with kids. He’s just looking for the right loving home to help him fully come out of his shell. Be sure to say hello to Monte on your next visit to the shelter!

Ruthy the one-year-old Chow Chow mix is a poofball whose face makes her look like she’s half-bear, half-fox. Even though she’s young, she already knows some manners. For example, she didn’t take a single step away from her kennel until I put the right walking collar on her. Ruthy walks nicely on the leash for the most part, though she does get the occasional burst of energy and wants to run a little ways.

Orphans of the Storm Dogs: Ruthy 2

Ruthy is so fluffy

Ruthy hopped on and then over one of the benches during our walk, and then joined me on another bench later so I could pet her some more. She can get a little bark-y when she passes by other dogs, so Ruthy would do best as the only pet in an adult home, with someone who has experience with her breed. If you love Chow Chows, come in soon to meet Ruthy!

Trent the five-year-old Black and Tan Coonhound mix is a pretty typical Hound dog. He can be talkative with that signature baying, but was mostly quiet when we were out on our walk. Trent pulls on the leash a bit when he first comes out of his kennel because he’s excited to go for a walk, but he settles down quickly and is a good walking companion.

Orphans of the Storm Dogs: Trent 2

Trent loves the outdoors

Trent seems to be particularly fond of walking through tall grasses. His nose goes high and low to pick up as many scents as it can. It’s fun to watch! Trent is a sweet boy who likes getting pet and is gentle when taking treats from your hand. If you ain’t looking for nothing but a Hound dog, come in soon to meet Trent!

Orphans of the Storm Dogs: Trent 1

You will often find Trent with his nose to ground

Cass the six-year-old Catahoula Leopard Dog mix came from an owner who lost their job and couldn’t take care of him anymore. He used to live with another dog before he came to the shelter. Cass attends play group regularly and gets along with other dogs.

Orphans of the Storm Dogs: Cass and Crowley

Cass and Crowley are a dynamic duo

Cass is easy to walk. He didn’t pull on the leash at all, even when he first came out of his kennel. Cass enjoyed exploring the off-leash run. Cass is definitely more of a sniffer and was snuffling around behind the bushes for a while. He is affectionate and will give you doggy kisses. Cass is looking for a home with either just adults or a family with older children. Be sure to say hello to Cass!

Orphans of the Storm Dogs: Cass 1

Cass’s eyes are mesmerizing!

Chip the ten-year-old Beagle mix may be a senior, but don’t let his age fool you. Chip still has springs for legs! When I was putting his leash on, he jumped straight up and booped my nose with his nose. Chip is a silly boy who starts barking when he sees or hears people in the distance. He also apparently doesn’t like golf carts and got a little huffy when one passed by the other side of the fence at the far end of the woodland preserve.

Orphans of the Storm Dogs: Chip 1

Chip making his way through the woods

Chip is a problem-solver. It was a hot day, and he was getting tired by the end of our walk. So what does he do? Goes to the shady underside of a bush, digs himself a little bed in the cool dirt, and plops down to take a breather. Genius! When it isn’t too hot of a day, Chip is a nice walking buddy who moves at an easy pace. If you’re considering an older dog but still want some spunk, come in soon to meet Chip!

Orphans of the Storm Dogs: Chip 2

Chip is a smarty-pants

I also saw Big Boy (who thinks he is a lapdog) and Mojo, Conny (who loves belly rubs), Elijah, Jasmine (who is super sweet), Nash (who enjoyed romping around the Enrichment Park and found a new favorite squeaky toy), Rudy, and Sadie (who covered my face in doggy kisses).
